Losing weight is a topic that is constantly on Americans’ minds, but with so many dieting options out there, it's hard to decipher the good ways to lose weight from the bad.
Some good ways to lose weight are: a solid foundation on healthy nutrition and smart food choices.
Be in the know
Let us ask you this: what do you do when you see a sugary treat? Do you want to gobble it up or run away with your tail in-between our legs. When it comes to nutrition, it's easy to get lost because there's so much information out there. One of the most commonly misunderstood nutritional components is sugar, but not all sugars are bad for you.
Sugar, no spice and everything nice
Many people believe that sugar is responsible for rising obesity rates in our country. High calorie junk food, that’s packed full of sugar, will definitely leave a dent in your weight loss efforts, but the natural fructose sugar found in fruits and vegetables and lactose sugar in milk and dairy is part of a healthy diet.
So if you want to know some good ways to lose weight, don’t listen to everything that you hear and eat more natural sugar, but avoid these imposters:
Granola bars—Granola bars are advertised to seem like the healthy option, but they’re really nothing more than a health food imposter. Granola bars contain a lot of added sugar. Instead of a prepackaged granola bar, you could make your own trail mix. It’s fast, easy and healthy. Just take a handful of nuts, dried fruit with natural sugar and maybe some dark chocolate. Throw it in a bag and you're good to go.
Cereals—Get in the habit of looking closely at cereal nutrition labels because some granola-based cereals have as much as 13 grams of sugar or as little as 2. It may look like the healthy option, but cereal is good at deception.
Barbeque sauce—Who doesn’t love to slather their delicious chicken breast in barbeque sauce? Someone who doesn’t want an additional 11 grams of sugar per serving from their favorite bottled barbeque sauce, that’s who. Seasoning your meat with a rub is just as delicious and a much better nutritional option.
Fruit juice—Even though the nutrition label claims that its 100% fruit juice, a 10-ounce bottle of pure apple juice could have as many as 32 grams of sugar. Choose fresh fruit over a glass of fruit juice. While it still contains some sugar, it also has fiber—making it the much better option.
Lemonade—Lemons are naturally good for you, but lemonade—not so much. As many as 25 grams of sugar could be added to sweeten your frosty glass of lemonade so if you really want a nice, cold glass of lemonade, we suggest making it fresh at home so you can control the amount of sugar you use.
Sugar is not the only misunderstood nutrition component
There are so many in’s and out’s to the world of nutrition that it’s impossible to clarify or bust every nutritional myth out there, but one thing is for sure: a diet meal program may be your best bet if you don’t know which healthy choices you should be making or lack the time to eat healthy.
Some good ways to lose weight are to be free your mind and be open to trying new things.
