What is a heart attack diet?

Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial to avoiding obesity, which is a precursor to diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease and many other serious conditions.  The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that you limit your intake of foods high in calories and/or low in nutrition. This includes soft drinks and candy that contain a lot of sugar.  Limiting your intake of these "empty calories" will help maintain your ideal body weight and balance out the number of calories you eat with the ones you use each day.  Instead, try to incorporate healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy protein into your diet.  Also, try to avoid saturated fats, (which cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries). 

Additionally, the AHA recommends that you cut down on salt because exceeding the recommended amounts can be unhealthy and can contribute to high blood pressure.  This can be tricky, because many prepared foods, such as canned soups and vegetables, and meats already contain a hidden amount of salt.

What else can I do?

A heart attack diet will greatly help reduce your risk for heart disease.  Regular exercise, such as walking for at least 30 minutes a day will also help maintain good health and optimum body weight.
