Packaging & Recycling

How do you keep your food fresh?

Keeping food fresh can be the hardest part of meal prep and delivery food. At bistroMD, we cook our food using fresh ingredients and immediately flash freeze and seal the entree.

This method retains all of the juice, flavor, and texture of the meal when reheated. With our technique, all our meals can be kept frozen and fresh until they are ready to be heated and enjoyed.

Every box is packed with dry ice and insulated to keep your meals cold.

How do I peel off the plastic film?

This depends on how you heat your meals.

If you are cooking in the microwave, leave the plastic on until after its cooked, and then carefully peel back a corner or puncture the film while watching out for any trapped steam.

If you are cooking in the oven, remove the film before you start heating the meal. Our CPET trays are oven safe to 400°F and leech no harmful chemicals or plastic, but the plastic film wont do well in the oven!

Is your packaging environmentally friendly?

Yes! At bistroMD, we're committed not only to your health but also to the health of the planet. That's why we take extra steps to make our packaging as sustainable as possible.

Each week, your meals arrive in a 100% recyclable cooler liner made from post-consumer and post-industrial materials. This helps reduce waste while keeping your entrees fresh and safe.

How long can I store the meals in my freezer?

Our meals have a long shelf life because they are quickly flash-frozen after preparation. A 'Best By' date is also stamped on the clear film that tightly seals each meal.

What do I do with the dry ice?

Handling dry ice safely is crucial since it is extremely cold and hovers around -109.3°F. Here are some recommendations:

-To safely dispose of dry ice, remove the entrées from the cooler and leave any remaining dry ice inside the cooler. With the box flaps left loosely opened, allow the dry ice to sublimate in a well-ventilated, safe area away from children or pets.

-Handle dry ice carefully and wear protective clothing/gloves to prevent freezer burn.

-Never dispose of dry ice in a sink, drain, toilet, or garbage can, as doing so can cause severe damage to pipes and surfaces.

-Never store dry ice in a tightly sealed container, such as a plastic or glass bottle, or any container with a screw-top lid that will not vent. Styrofoam is an appropriate storage material since it is both insulated and not airtight.

What type of container is used for your entrees?

We use CPET trays that are oven safe to 400°F and leech no harmful chemicals or plastic.

The container has an approximate size of 8.5 in Length x 6.5 in Height x 2 in Width. It is sealed with a thin plastic film that keeps contents contained while shipping.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Yes! Most of our packaging can be recycled:

  • The box and meal sleeves can be recycled with other paper products.
Once the dry ice has evaporated, bags and plastic trays can be recycled with other clean plastics.
  • We use different liners depending on the time of year, your location, and shipping duration. Each option is designed to keep your meals safe while also reducing environmental impact and lowering costs by always using the most efficient option:
    • Paper Liners – Made with 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and are 100% curbside recyclable. Simply place them in your home recycling bin.
    • Denim Liners – Created from 100% recycled denim (PCR). These can be repurposed, donated to textile recycling programs, or disposed of responsibly if local textile recycling isn’t available.
    • Bubble Liners – Made from 100% polyethylene. These are store drop-off recyclable (like plastic grocery bags). You can bring them to participating retailers with designated drop-off bins.
  • By tailoring liners based on season, distance, and cost efficiency, we ensure your meals arrive fresh while minimizing waste.
