Sure, there are the typical weight loss foods that people think they should include in their diet: fruits, vegetables, salad, etc. But, there are other foods out there that aren’t as popular, that surprisingly pack the same nutritional benefits.
Here is a list of some weight loss foods you’ve probably missed during your many trips to the grocery store.
1. Kohlrabi
A relative to cabbage and lettuce, you’ve probably seen this veggie in the produce section of the grocery store without even noticing.
Kohlrabi is a turnip-like root vegetable, and is usually light green or purplish-brown. It has a stalk that is very similar to broccoli, but it tastes a little lighter and a little sweeter. It makes a great addition to any salad, and can really add some great flavor to your next batch of stir fry.
Not only is kohlrabi packed with nutrition, but it is full of potassium and vitamin C, and it contains phytochemicals, which some studies have shown can prevent certain diseases.
2. Yerba Mate
Basically, this is tea with a weird name. Different varieties of tea make great choices when you are trying to eat healthier, but this tea is extra special.
According to a study conducted at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 2004, yerba mate contains a high antioxidant content that promotes cell survival better than green tea or red wine.
Another special thing about this type of tea? It also contains xanthinine alkaloids, which is a mood elevator and muscle relaxant found in chocolate. It’s also zero calories.
A staple in South American countries, including Brazil, yerba mate can also be infused as an icy beverage, and is sometimes sold as a non-carbonated soft drink with fruit flavoring.
3. Cocoa Nibs
Who doesn’t like to nibble on cocoa, right? Before chocolate is ground down into the flavor we’ve come to know and love, it comes from the cocoa bean, which is exactly what cocoa nibs are.
Cocoa nibs are basically roasted bits of cocoa beans and make for a tasty weight loss food. These little nibs of cocoa can add great flavor to any type of beverage, including smoothies, or can pack a little extra punch into your coffee as a garnish on top.
Not only is cocoa packed with antioxidants, but some studies have shown that regular consumption may decrease blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels.
You can purchase cocoa nibs at a variety of grocery stores, including Whole Foods.
4. Amaranth
This grain may sound unfamiliar to you by name, but it contains a wide variety of health benefits and it is unique because it contains no gluten.
In addition to being gluten-free, amaranth is also very high in protein and is also higher in fiber compared to most other grains. Other than a good dose of fiber, amaranth is also high in calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A and C.
