How to Lose Weight Drinking Wine

Weight loss is complex, but it mostly pursues when calories out exceed calories in. So first up, know the calories of wine and how they can fit into a balanced eating (and drinking) pattern.

Calories in Wine

Alcohol supplies calories as is. Mix it with sugary mixers and syrups, a single drink can pour out hundreds of calories. And if thinking that fruity beverage was "healthy," you may want to rethink and reconsider your go-to drink. A strawberry margarita can contain upwards of 500 calories!

Five ounces of a glass of wine contains about 120 calories and less than 2 grams of carbohydrates. This is quite trivial compared to other alcoholic beverages.

Drink Alcohol in Moderation

To prevent from wine weight gain and foster weight loss, moderate drinking is key.

The most up-to-date Dietary Guidelines suggests up to one drink per day for women and two drinks for men. Dr. Cederquist, founder of the nation's leading weight loss meal delivery service, recommends women consume no more than 3 alcoholic drinks weekly. Men should consume no more than 4 alcoholic drinks per week.

Also control portion sizes. Standard drinking sizes include 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, and 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

Red Wine vs. White Wine

Each wine supplies calories and the type of wine is not necessarily beneficial for weight loss, but overall health.

Healthcare experts generally promote red over white, as white wine often offers fewer antioxidants. White wine can also lead to adverse health effects such as skin cancer.

Conversely, consuming the red variety may protect against cancer, lower an individual's risk of cardiovascular disease, and promote longevity.

Wine Before Bed?

With wine o'clock open for interpretation, is there a right time to drink wine for weight loss?

A study conducted at Washington State University suggests a link between wine and weight loss thanks to its resveratrol content. Resveratrol is an antioxidant explored to ward off disease, but it also may also convert "white fat" into "beige fat."

"Resveratrol can enhance this conversion of white fat to beige fat. And when you have high rates of browning, it can partially prevent obesity," states Professor of animal sciences Min Du.

Resveratrol may curb appetite, too. Research shows bees decrease food intake, live longer when given the compound found in red wine aka resveratrol. Health experts speculate wine before bed could deter those late night munchies, in turn saving on calories and weight gain risk.

Truly, though, take this research as a grain of grape. "Many of the beneficial polyphenols are insoluble and get filtered out during the wine production process."

Du explains resveratrol is found in all fruits but are especially rich in blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, and apples. Twelve ounces is about two or three servings per day. In contrast, wines contain only a fraction of resveratrol and other phenolic compounds found in grapes.

And if using alcohol in hopes of a deep sleep, you may be doing more harm than good. While a glass of wine may induce feelings of tiredness, alcohol interferes with natural sleep cycles. This can be quite damaging in the long run and disrupt quality sleep altogether.

Sticking to the recommended portion and serving sizes not only staves from weight gain, but minimizes the dangerous effects of alcohol. Heavy drinking can lead to weight gain, injury, liver disease, and many other potentially fatal health conditions.

And if not already drinking, there is no need to start. The health benefits of wine are ongoing, but it is well-known a healthy diet and regular exercise facilitate weight loss.
