Great Diet Foods

Maintaining a healthy diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle, but dieting can be difficult when the healthy food that you’re eating lacks the flavor and variety that you’re craving.  In order to continue on the path to healthy eating, great diet foods are essential.

Here are some from WebMD to find great diet foods:

Pick out some pre-packaged calorie-controlled snacks.  There are several 100-calorie snack options available – think chips, cookies, cupcakes and so on.  Calorie-controlled snack packages allow you to eat, but not to excess.  All of the calorie counting has been done for you, so all you need to do is open and enjoy.  For even healthier eating, look for packages that contain whole grains, fiber and protein.

Find healthy fast food.  Many fast food chains have made efforts to include great diet food options on their menus.  Read menus carefully, or consult the chain’s website for lower-calorie options.

Try low-fat and fat-free dairy.  There are lower-fat varieties of milk, yogurt, cheese, sour cream and cream cheese in every grocery store.  The lower-fat options still have all the great taste you’re looking for, as well as the nutrients you need in a healthy diet.

Look for the right desserts.  Lower-calorie, portion-controlled desserts are great diet food options.  Look for pre-packaged items to take out the guesswork.  Consider chewing sugarless gum or suck on a hard candy to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Add flavored mustards and vinegars to recipes.  You’ll add lots of flavor, but not a lot of calories with garlic, wasabi or Dijon mustards, as well as balsamic, wine, herb, cider and fruit-flavored vinegars.  Use these instead of oil, mayonnaise or butter in your favorite recipes.

Try light salad dressings.  With little effort, you can substitute lower-calorie, reduced-fat dressings in place of full-fat dressings.

Add low-calorie flavor when cooking.  Use wine or concentrated juices such as pineapple, apple or orange for flavorful, great diet food.

Use nutritious dips.  Eat vegetables or low-calorie pretzels and chips with dips like hummus, salsa, black bean, mustard and other fat-free options

Eat breakfast cereals.  Cereals are great diet foods, as long as you find ones that are whole-grain, high fiber, high protein and low sugar.  Top off your cereal with fruit and low-fat milk for an even tastier breakfast.

Look for lean protein.  Great diet foods with flavor include eggs, skinless poultry, beans, nuts, shrimp, crab, fish, lean beef and lean pork.  Trim off visible fat and keep portions under control.

Eat more whole grains.  Whole grains are a great source of filling fiber.  Choose your favorites like fat free popcorn, brown rice and whole grain pasta.

Get creative with fruit.  Fruits are great diet foods because they can help satisfy a craving for sweets and are full of essential nutrients, while also being low-calorie.  Have fresh, frozen, canned and dried fruits available for a quick snack.  Incorporate fruits into cereal, yogurt, waffles, pancakes and more.

Don’t forget to eat your vegetables.  Keep greens, carrots and broccoli on hand for ready to make salads.  For a quick snack, consider pre-packaged assorted veggie sticks along with a low-fat dip.

Portion control, along with lower-calorie choices can help you maintain your diet.  Look for these great diet foods to keep variety and excitement alive in every meal you eat.
