How to Diet for Your Wedding Day

83% of brides wanted to shed weight before their wedding. So if wondering how to get in shape and lose weight for your wedding (and keeping it off!), here's how!

Reported by New York Daily News and according to a survey of 1,000 brides by Fitness magazine, 83 percent of brides wanted to shed weight before their wedding and many were prepared to take drastic action to achieve their goal, including 26 percent identifying they would sacrifice their honeymoon and 25 percent would sacrifice their gifts to reach their ideal weight! Moreover, 23 percent would be happy to gain 25 pounds after the wedding if they could lose 15 pounds before walking down the aisle and 14 percent would fast for a week before heading to the altar. Not only are these goals unrealistic and dangerous, but unnecessary if navigating through your weight loss journey with a well-executed plan. So if wondering how to get in shape and lose weight for your wedding (and keeping it off!), here's how!

How to Lose Weight for Your Wedding

Getting Started
Sometimes the hardest part is getting started... But allow this time to not be an added stressor, but rather an opportunity to embark on an exciting, health journey! Start out by consulting with your healthcare provider, along with meeting with a Registered Dietitian or personal trainer for added guidance and expertise. Becoming acclimated with common nutrition and exercise principles ensures safe weight loss and health goals and measures.

Setting SMART Goals
Standing for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely, brides should be setting SMART goals, as they have shown to be the most effective and withhold the greatest compliance. "I want to lose 20 pounds before my wedding!" Is this realistic? Well, it mostly depends on the timeframe. Considering nutrition experts encourage individuals to lose no more than one to two pounds each week, unless recommended and monitored by their primary care provider, losing the 20 pounds in a week is not realistic. But losing it in three months? That's much more feasible, along with being a safer and sustainable goal.

Constructing A Nutritious Diet
Rather than residing to a fad or crash diet, it is imperative to not only consume nutritious foods, but eat enough. Deprivation does not result to healthy weight loss, and might even sabotage your weight-loss efforts just as much as overeating can. Simply put, when you do not consume sufficient calories for available energy, the body starts to hold onto the calories or perhaps take it away from precious muscle mass. However, consuming a nutritious wedding day diet not only keeps calories naturally in check, but supplies the body with nutrients it needs. Go for more wholesome foods, mostly including whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean and plant-based sources, and healthy fats, rather than highly processed products filled with refined sugars, fats, and sodium.

Designing Your Workout Plan
Pairing a nutritious diet with an effective workout plan can truly rev up your wedding weight loss efforts. But getting in shape with a wedding dress workout plan is not necessary a rigorous schedule filled with two-a-days, but a balanced regimen comprised of aerobic exercise and strength training. Aim for at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise each week, including the activities of running, biking, and swimming. Incorporate two to three days of strength training weekly and focus on the major muscle groups. Consulting with a personal trainer or taking a public workout class can also help safeguard safe workout mechanics. And rather than heading to the gym amongst a busy schedule, you can save precious time by working out at home with this 30-minute boot camp workout.

Overcoming Setbacks
Even if aiming to follow the most structured and ambitious schedule to lose weight for the wedding, a busy life can cause missed workouts and resorted calls to the pizza delivery man. However, it is important to not dwell on such mishaps and overcome setbacks, as recurring negative thoughts can detour and diminish motivation to keep going. Have a plan set into place if feeling overwhelmed or defeated, including taking a walk in fresh air or calling a friend.
