"Gradually Gained with Menopause"

   I first realized that I was in the midst of the onset of menopause when I had lower libido, weight gain, and I felt sluggish, tired, and just 'off'. Things weren't the same anymore, and I wasn't feeling very good. But my main frustration I had was my unexplained weight gain. I never had any trouble losing weight in the past. I could indulge at social events and I'd see 5 pounds creep on, and it was never a problem to cut back and modify my eating for a couple of weeks. I'd be back to normal. But once the switch became flipped and I entered full-fledged menopause, that all became a wash.

   Twenty pounds went on, and the classic way from college of losing weight wasn't working. It was like I was fighting the weight, and things were tighter than ever before. I kept getting higher and ten more pounds crept on. I felt so stuck, with no successes.

   My body changed so much, I grew out of my underwear and my thighs were much larger. I had more belly weight gain at first, and then all of my body started getting bigger. My breasts became enlarged, and I was in denial. I realized this when all I shopped for were shoes and hats, because I hated all my other clothes. I had more shoes and hats and handbags, and couldn't bring myself to shop for sizes in a different size range. And I couldn't accept the style that comes with that different size range.

   Prior to beginning Dr. Cederquist's menopause metabolism program, I tried cutting back on portions, I ate more soups and vegetables, I did lots of jello and low calorie foods. None of it was working, and I craved carbohydrates like potatoes, bread, and stuffing like it was nobody's business. I had no idea what to try, and no idea where to go next. I realized I needed a physician, with an able support staff, because I couldn't figure it out myself.

   Now I have relearned everything I knew about dieting. The first 6 months were terribly difficult, working and shopping and traveling, until I realized that it was becoming a part of the way I ate, a part of the way I lived. I was never hungry, and never needed to indulge in alcohol or give into any sugar craving.

   Everything about my menopause metabolism has changed now. I feel fantastic, and I don't even thing about the old ways because I'm so happy and feel so gratified with my results. I've learned not to quit, but to keep going.

   Once my husband and now teammate got on board and joined my health efforts, it made a world of difference. After he joined my efforts, I enjoyed activities and time spent with him so much, and together we came up with good food choices. He began not only encouraging me, as he always had, but began putting action behind his words and joining me on my walks. It felt like the final step to a complete lifestyle change that has allowed me to defeat the menopause metabolism. It has taken about 8 months, and now everything has fallen into place.

"Sudden Surgical Menopause"

   In my 20's, I was thin, but smoked heavily. I quit smoking at age 29, and then rapidly put on weight. The weight gain continued every year into my 40's. Then at age 47 I had a total hysterectomy removing my uterus and ovaries. What would have been instant menopause was averted by an estrogen patch applied in the hospital immediately after surgery with follow-up hormone replacement therapy in the pill form prescribed by my gynecologist. I took a high dose of estrogen daily for the next 13 yrs. I also continued to gain weight.

   A few months prior to my 60th birthday, I made an effort to get into shape. I joined the local recreation center with a pool and began water aerobics on a daily basis 5-6 days a week. I also rode my bike to and from the rec center averaging about 50 miles a week. I considered getting into shape my 'new job' and made it a priority. I was feeling great, but even with all this exercise I had not lost a single pound.

   So by the end of the year I decided it was time to do something more to control my weight. I saw my primary care physician and asked about gastric bypass. I had read about all the pros and cons and believed after all my other attempted failures at weight loss that it was my last resort. My physician told me that I could not be considered a candidate for gastric bypass until I had demonstrated that I had 6 months of dieting under a physician's care which was to be carefully monitored. He recommended that I see Dr. Cederquist.

   Meeting with Dr. Cederquist was wonderful. In addition to really understanding my failure at dieting, she was able to determine that I had high insulin levels, which if left untreated would quickly lead to diabetes. Her program addressed insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome and the difficulty losing weight with these conditions. This was the first real alternative to gastric bypass that I had seen and I was anxious to begin.

   With a program designed especially for me, my weight loss has been steady and at the end of a 12 week period I have lost 30 lbs. This is actually working! My insulin levels are back to normal and I am very optimistic about the next phase of my weight loss.

"Complete Hysterectomy and Breast Cancer"

   I entered menopause fully after a complete hysterectomy at age 50. As with most surgical menopause patients, I was prescribed hormone replacement therapy as soon as I left the hospital. About three years later I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, estrogen positive. I underwent chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and five years of Tamoxifen.

  I had hot flashes every 45 minutes around the clock for the full 5 years on Tamoxifen, and then after that I had them many times a day and night. I lost about 25 pounds while I was on chemotherapy, and then gained about 30 pounds when I began taking the Tamoxifen.

  I had tried every known diet to mankind prior to coming to Dr. Cederquist's office. When I started the program I was recently divorced and needed to help my self-esteem and feel better. I lost 50 pounds in about 9 months, and I am elated.

  My metabolism has always been slow, and especially now due to fairly severe arthritis and fibromyalgia. I have a hard time exercising sufficiently. This is troublesome because I was also very athletic and active, and I find it depressing to not be able to do the things I loved to do.

   I have a hard time accepting these limitations. I am still on a journey to lose more weight, and I am determined to continue trying and not give up. I have kept the weight I lost off, and I am gearing up for the next round of weight loss to come. Now that I know what my body needs to lose the weight, I am confident I can be successful again.

"Metabolically Stuck"

   When I was 54, I started to see that my periods were becoming lighter and shorter in duration. I had occasional night-time hot flashes, but the worst symptom I had was insomnia, which lasted for nearly a year. I noticed my skin getting drier, and my eyes itched often, and some vaginal dryness.

  I gained a few pounds a year until I was about 10-12 pounds over my usual weight. So I went back to weight watchers and added an extra exercise and diet program from the YMCA, and I aimed to eat only two times daily. I was extremely frustrated because these measures had always worked for me previously, and my weight was not budging. This just didn't seem fair. I was in a pattern of starting a diet almost every Monday and going off by the weekend.

  I came to Dr. Cederquist because I wanted to lose the extra pounds and to look better. I was concerned that I might continue gaining weight if I didn't do something. I knew that led to more health issues that I didn't want to be faced with. I especially hated that I looked like a marshmallow on toothpicks because my fat was around my middle and I have small bone structure. I felt that I had tried and failed to lose and keep the pounds off, so coming to see Dr. Cederquist was a last resort, and my final effort.

  I complied with the plan because I was making a determined effort to lose weight before I encountered health issues that coincide with weight gains. I was skeptical of the idea that my metabolism was different because of menopause. I had eaten a "healthy diet" for years, exercised and avoided many health risks, like smoking.

  I had to do some research on my own, I wanted to see evidence from medical journals and reports. I now begrudgingly accept my menopause metabolism, because I'm living proof. I have experimented with consuming foods I used to think were healthy, like a lot of whole grains, and sure enough, I can tip the scales upward in no time. I have also had this discussion with my women friends in the same predicament and we hate to admit it, but it's true. We are educated professionals and we have prided ourselves on our mostly healthy lifestyles. This aspect of aging took us unawares and we have not accepted it without complaint.

  However, now I understand the best way to eat for my metabolism, and it is not a situation where I must succumb to being unable to lose weight. I have reversed my metabolism into one that is able to lose fat and keep it off. I am convinced I have outsmarted my own menopause metabolism.

"I Am On HRT And Still Managed To Lose Weight"

   I had a full hysterectomy in my 40's, and I maintained my weight between 108-110 on hormone replacement therapy. As I progressed into my 50's (and I may mention that I did not change anything about the way I was eating or exercising) the scale started creeping up and my body began to gain. 12 years ago I weighed 134, and more recently at age 61 I weighed 165 pounds! I gained weight all over including my breasts. I went from a C cup to a DD. I was 55 pounds overweight within the years following my hysterectomy.

  Even while on the hormone replacement therapy, I had experienced hot flashes, among other menopausal symptoms. I was most frustrated about my weight not budging. I reduced my caloric intake, tried a myriad of diets, including Weight Watchers, South Beach, and just cutting back on calories. I continued exercising, walking, elliptical, treadmill, rowing machine, and exercise classes, including doing double exercise classes on some days after spending 15-20 minutes on the machines. I did all this with no success, with no weight loss at all to show for it. I was at my wits end.

  I knew my friend had been successful with the Cederquist program, and so I was hopeful that I would be too. I have learned why my body gained the weight, and better yet, how to lose it. I have lost 26.5 pounds so far, and I am very happy with how I have been able to continue losing. I am glad to be finally making steps forward, and ending the vicious weight gain cycle. Now, with the right program and guidance, I know the menopause metabolism can be conquered.

"Fighting A Losing Battle"

I first realized menopause was upon me when I was 38 years old. I started waking up in the middle of the night with a pool of sweat between my breasts, and having a heavy menses. My prayers for larger breasts were finally answered. By the time I turned 41, my clothes were tight and the scale told me I had gained 11 pounds in 3 years. I tried exercising, dieting, and I was able to get back to 127 pounds. I was in a continuous battle, and the weight crept back on. More long I was gaining more than one pound a year and at 71 years old I weighed 176 - a losing battle!
