To Buy Groceries Online: That is the Question
There is a lot of talk online if you should buy groceries vs ordering full meals online.
Online shopping has become increasingly popular as the years go by. In 2012, U.S. e-commerce sales amounted to 289 billion dollars, up from 256 billion dollars in 2011. Simultaneously, the number of U.S. digital shoppers is expected to grow from 137 million in 2010 to 175 million in 2016, according to eMarketer estimates.
Buying groceries online dates back to the internet boom of the 1990’s, when HomeGrocer.com (later rebranded as Webvan) launched one of the first online-only supermarket businesses, stocking product at dedicated warehouse facilities. Millions of dollars in wasted spending and very few sales later, the business went bust. A little over two decades ago, online grocery shopping did not have the platform to be successful. Now, as our culture leans toward a sense of instant gratification, this trend in online shopping is not surprising.
According to Nielson, there are five things you should know about buying groceries online.
1. It takes some time getting used to.
2. Online baskets generally cost more than offline (physical) grocery baskets.
3. The interactions with the online ‘store’ environment are fundamentally differently than an in-store experience.
Big brand ‘physical’ advantages do not translate online. So in other words, online shopping levels out the playing field.
Large and small brands can win online by combining marketing savvy with digital capabilities to add value.
Buying groceries online, like anything, has its pro’s and con’s. It is more convenient, but it is not faster than physically going to the grocery store.
The drawbacks and how bistroMD can help.
Buying groceries online isn’t necessarily faster. You still have to wait for your food to arrive, if it arrives on time. The food is usually much more expensive too.
Is buying groceries online really worth it so you don’t have to make the trek to the grocery store and spend 10 dreaded minutes unloading the groceries and putting them away? Some people think it is, but many do not.
While you do save some time, you still have to cook and clean up when you are done. On top of that, you must possess some knowledge on nutrition so you know which ingredients to buy and which healthy recipes to select.
