Tips for Creating Low Sodium Meals


At some point in time in your life, you likely have started to think about eating healthier. As a teen or college student, it’s likely you had little problem downing a cheeseburger or two or having pizzas every day. As we grow older, however, we start to realize that these types of foods are not doing our body any good, which means that we need to change the way we eat. If your doctor has ever told you that you are at risk for, or that you currently have, high blood pressure issues, you will likely be asked to alter your diet. A diet that is filled with low sodium meals is the type of diet that you’ll be striving to attain.

More Than Just Salt

When most people hear that they have to switch to a diet that is filled with low sodium meals, the first thing that they think is that they merely have to stop pouring salt on their food and that they need to change nothing else. This, however, is definitely not true. A diet filled with low sodium meals is much more than just cutting out the salt that you put on foods at the table, although that too is a good idea. Actually, however, you will need to learn about sodium and which foods have what amount of sodium in them.

For instance, did you know that canned vegetables are much higher in sodium than frozen vegetables? One way to cut down the sodium in your diet is to switch to frozen vegetables. Also, did you realize that one of the only reasons why you put salt on your food is because it’s too bland? Getting a diet that is filled with low sodium meals doesn’t mean that you have to get used to eating bland foods. Instead, try making sure that your food has lots of colors and variety in it, as well as different textures. These flavors will bring something extra into the meal and will help you to keep away from the salt.

Wine is a great tool for someone who is trying to have low sodium meals. Meats, for instance, can be marinated in wine to help make them tastier. This way you don’t have to add salt to the meat before you cook it. And wine can also be added to soups as well in order to make the dish more flavorful. The alcohol in the wine burns off during cooking, so you can feed it to anyone in the family, including children. Orange juice can also be used to marinate meat and poultry – another great substitute for salty marinades.

Finally, try to avoid using garlic salt or onion salt. The second word in both is salt, and if you add these things to your meals, they may taste great but they’ll be adding salt into your diet when you’re really trying to get away from it. When you’re trying to create your own low sodium meals, try using fresh onions or minced garlic instead of salt. You’ll get tons of flavor and no salt.
