Learn How to Eat Healthy

Learn How to Eat Healthy

We have all heard the demanding request to “eat your vegetables” and the age-old adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  As true as these sayings may be, they are not the most helpful if you are trying to figure out how to eat healthy.  Since many medical conditions like obesity, diabetes and heart disease can be attributed to an unhealthy diet, learning how to eat healthy is an important step toward safeguarding your health and improving your quality of life.  With a few simple steps, you can be on your way to healthy eating and living in no time with these suggestions.

Watch your portions

Even if you absolutely love cantaloupe, eating an entire melon is not healthy.  The same goes anything. Foods should be eaten in moderation because moderation is key. By knowing and following portion guidelines, you can eat your favorite foods and still be healthy.

So whether you are cooking for yourself or eating out at a restaurant, watch the amount of food you are eating.  Learn how to eat healthy by following portion guidelines by clicking here.

Add in variety

Just as eating too much on one thing can be unhealthy, so can eating too little of another.  A healthy diet consists of protein, vegetables, carbohydrates and fruit.

If you are have troubling incorporating fruits and vegetables into your diet, try putting them into a smoothie, stew, or hide them beneath a sauce.  If getting enough protein is difficult, try adding in some cheese or yogurt into your meal or make a meatier sandwich—because lean meats have a lot of protein in them.

Remember, a variety of these types of food is very important. Click here for the recommended amounts of each food (these values are only recommendations and vary from person to person. For a more accurate estimate, contact a health care professional).

Always eat breakfast

Starting your day off with a healthy breakfast is a great way to get your metabolism working and can improve work performance, focus and also lead to weight loss.  Breakfast does not have to be an elaborate or complex meal; yogurt, eggs and oatmeal will suffice.  Also, healthy leftovers from the night before are great if you do not typically like breakfast food.

Eat every few hours

When first thinking about how to eat healthy, skipping meals or cutting out snacks may seem like a good way to reduce your caloric intake, but this is not healthy—at all.  Instead, aim to eat a meal or snack every two to three hours.  Try to incorporate protein into your snacks and avoid high calorie and fattening snack choices like chips and donuts.  This will keep your body fueled, your metabolism working and could ultimately help you eat fewer calories.

Learning how to eat healthy does not need to be difficult.  Focus on watching portions, adding variety, eating breakfast and eating every few hours and you will be on the right track to success.
