Is Fresh Food Healthier than Frozen?

Let's dispel some of the most common myths surrounding the debate on which is more nutritious, frozen or fresh food. With a growing movement to be healthier and eat nutritious foods, we want to share the facts with you.

Is Fresh Food Healthier than Frozen?

There are myriad amounts of 'fresh' food choices at the grocery store. If we examine the meaning of fresh in the US, it does not mean better than frozen. There are few regulations for food labeled 'natural' in the United States, meaning manufacturers can include ingredients that may not be considered natural or fresh by consumers. The poultry industry has been criticized for labeling chicken meat as “all natural” after it has been injected with a saline solution, but there is no recourse for this untruthful labeling.

Let's see if you can decipher fact from fiction when it comes to frozen vs fresh food.

True or False? Frozen Vegetables are Less Nutritious Than Fresh Ones.

This is false. Take into account, for anything you eat, the time it takes for the food to travel to you and the amount of nutrients that get depleted along the way. There may not be a difference in the taste for fresh vs. frozen foods - but fresh food may be lacking in nutritional value. University of Georgia conducted a unique study comparing frozen versus fresh fruits and vegetables. The study mimicked consumer purchasing and storing of commonly purchased fruits and vegetables, in which the results showed nutritional values being higher in frozen foods.

While fresh fruits and vegetables might hold the illusion that they contain more value, they actually lose a lot of their nutrients when being transported. This can be caused not only from time spent traveling, but also lighting and temperature changes causing the produce to lose vital nutrients like vitamin C and folate (which decreases irritability, mental fatigue, forgetfulness, confusion, and insomnia).

On the other hand, frozen fruits and vegetables are flash frozen immediately (within hours) after being picked. This process of freezing locks in sensitive nutrients for an extended amount of time (usually about one year if kept frozen). The produce selected for freezing is harvested at its most ripe stage, unlike fresh food that is harvested early and will ripen on its way to the market. Shortly after being picked, fruits and vegetables begin to lose moisture, become susceptible to spoilage and decline in nutritional value.

True or False? Frozen Food isn't as Fresh as Fresh Food.

False. When we look at different areas of food as well, it still remains that frozen food is fresher than fresh. If you consider where seafood comes from, the remote locations of the ocean where it is caught, to the dock, to the market, then in the display case, in this time it’s slowly spoiling. It could be days from catch to your table and by that time it is far from fresh. Seafood is frozen within hours of being caught, preserving its flavor and nutritional value until you are ready to prepare it.

True or False? Frozen Meals are Not Environmentally Friendly.

This myth is also false. Frozen food can actually lessen the amount of spoiled food that is thrown away. Frozen food can be divided to the correct portion sizes (if it isn't already) and can lasts a lot longer than a few days. Also, bistroMD uses the most environmentally safe packages to transport meals - even the cooler is recyclable.

True or False? All Frozen Foods Contain Preservatives.

False. BistroMD has created a good alternative to eating healthy, without having to worry about chemicals or additives. If you try just a week's worth of meals from bistroMD you will understand. You will not only feel the benefit of eating nutritious food but also enjoy the great fresh taste bistroMD has to offer in every meal.

What Other Health Benefits Can Come From Frozen Foods?

One of the greatest features of frozen food is that it eliminates the preparation that usually comes with fresh food. When fruits and vegetables are frozen they are usually prepped and ready for eating or cooking. This is exactly what bistroMD does as well. BistroMD provides you with the same quality food that we would put on our own dinner tables - fresh food that is prepared and ready for you to enjoy without the hassle of time spent going to the store, cooking, and cleaning.
