The Real Deal with Fad Diets
It’s that time of year again. The time when fad diets make their perennial appearance and tempt well-intentioned dieters with their claims of fast and easy weight loss. The problem? Most do not lead to lasting weight loss, and the weight that is lost inevitably comes back as soon as the diet has ended.
But therein lies another problem – the notion that the process of losing weight, or maintaining a healthy weight, even needs to have an end. For many people, food is no longer looked at as a means of survival, but rather, as a means of entertainment and enjoyment. It is this very perception that gives us the concept of starting, and later ending, a diet. It is also this perception that leads us to overeat in the first place, and thus leads to a never-ending cycle of weight gains and losses.
In this video, one of our very own Registered Dietitians, Carrie Wissemeier, explains the real deal with several popular fad diets, and provides real world tips on how to avoid the cycle of yo-yo dieting and finally achieve, and maintain, the weight loss that you desire. You will learn why gimmicky diets, such as the lemonade diet, not only rarely lead to measurable weight loss but can even have a negative impact on your health. Carrie also discusses single food diets such as the grapefruit and cabbage soup diets, and provides an insightful analysis on why hormone-based diets should be avoided at all costs.
