The Moments That Make Gaining Weight Easy
It seems like weight loss only works when we are looking, and as soon as we turn away it starts running in reverse. Watch out for these key moments to not slip on your diet.
Everyone likes a vacation, right? But what do we really do on vacation, besides relax?
If you said, “eating” then you can probably guess where we are headed with this…
There are moments in life that make gaining weight easy, and going on a relaxing vacation is just one of them.
Even though a vacation is just a “once in a while” kind of activity, there are other things in life that can make it easy to pack on the pounds.
We take a look at activities in life that can make gaining weight easy, and what you should be mindful of if you want to stay healthy.
On Your Next “Getaway,” GET AWAY from Unhealthy Foods
A vacation is the perfect moment in time to get away from the stressful environment of the real world, and to escape to a relaxing atmosphere.
Since we tend to put ourselves in a mental state of “not caring” when we are relaxed, this can often affect our dietary choices.
Each vacation spot has their own little niche when it comes to local cuisine. Taking a cruise to Mexico? Well, of course you are going to want to eat Mexican food, even if the typical taco only has over 300 calories.
So what if you have three or four of them? You're on vacation, right?
“When you go on vacation, it is so easy to forget about your weight loss goals,” says Christy, one of the lead dietitians for BistroMD.
“Most people associate dieting with stress. When people go on vacation, it makes it easy for them to gain weight because they don’t keep track of what they eat,” says Christy.
“The best thing people can do when they go on vacation is to prepare themselves before they are faced with temptation. Indulgence is okay, just as long as you don’t over do it,” says Christy.
Christy recommends putting a healthier spin on some of the local cuisine, depending on what region of the world you choose to vacation in. It's also a wise idea to pre-package some of your healthy snacks. This way you won't be as hungry when it's time to chow down.
For example: choose grilled fish instead of fried, fruits and vegetables instead of fries and coleslaw, and lean cuts of meat over the regular variety.
Breaking Up is Hard to do, but Eating More is Easy
We have all been there.
For many of us, the cure for our romantic blues is to reach in the fridge and pull out all of the junk food we can get. Break ups definitely make gaining weight a little easier.
Some people also drown their sorrows, literally, with a few drinks with friends at the bar.
The alternative? Instead of reaching for that pint of Ben and Jerry’s, or drinking a few cocktails, surround yourself with friends and engage in some sort of physical activity.
Go to a gym, find the nearest punching bag and release all of your frustrations.
Not only will you relieve stress, but you will also feel better at the end of the day.
Working Hard Leads to More Indulgence
Most of us have daily routines that can sometimes cause us to pull our hair out.
To unwind from a difficult day at the office, we convince ourselves we are too tired to cook, and go out to eat instead.
Eating out makes gaining weight easy because we aren't preparing our meals. Cooks and chefs prepare meals at restaurants based on what they are told to use, rather than what is going to be the most healthy for you.
In order to avoid gaining weight from eating out, it's important that you are mindful of what you are putting in your body.
"What many people don't realize is that certain foods can lead to more stress if you eat them on a daily basis," says Christy. "This also makes gaining weight easy. These are foods like heavy starches, and foods that contain a lot of salt."
If you are going to eat out every once in a while, this is okay, just as long as you know what to look for on the menu.
"When dining out, look for a meal that is more balanced, like grilled chicken with minimal toppings, and substitute sides like fries for broccoli," says Christy. "This way, you can still eat out, but you won't feel miserably full when you leave the restaurant."
