From the numbers on our birthday cakes to analyzing morbidity and mortality rates, life tends to be measured objectively and quantifiably. And while reducing chronic diseases to increase life expectancy is exciting, we must not discount the importance of quality of life throughout those extended years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, quality of life (QOL) is "a broad multidimensional concept that usually includes subjective evaluations of both positive and negative aspects of life" and embraces individual aspects of culture, values, and spirituality. Though the sense of QOL can differ from person-to-person, these 18 tips can improve overall quality of life for all!

How to Improve Quality of Life

1. Give Daily Gratitude
Whether writing in a journal or simply reflecting on life's blessings, start off the day by giving gratitude. And before you go to bed, accept and move on from any negativities and appreciate all the positive instances that occurred throughout your day.

2. Recognize Your Inspiration
Along with giving daily gratitude, consider what inspires you to hop out of bed each morning. Maybe it is the smile your husband gives you when you make the coffee in the morning? Or perhaps the notes you write in your kids' lunchboxes? When life gets hectic and tiring, remember these personal inspirations and motivators.

3. Smile Daily
Smiles can travel miles not only in your personal path, but be contagious for others in your line of sight. Smiling to and at yourself increases quality of life and self-confidence, along with boosting positivity in others.

4. Spread Love
From calling to tell your parents how much you love them to gearing up the confidence to go out in public with a "free hugs" sign, be the one to spread love in a world where criticisms, democracy, and hatred often circulate.

5. Do Random Acts of Kindness
Along with spreading love, gift selfless and random acts of kindness, including paying for a stranger's coffee, preparing a home cooked meal for a friend, and holding the door for someone. 6. Take Life Less Seriously
In such a work driven society, we often fall into the stress of pursuing perfection. And while there is a time and a place to put on a serious face, it certainly is not necessary around the clock. 7. Do Not Play Victim
Though there are instances in which you may get the shorter end of the stick, the world is not always out to get you. People who regularly play the victim card are often single-minded and transpire inward anger in a negative way. Despite the circumstances you may be dealing with, it is important to objectify the data at hand and consider the feelings of others.

8. Meditate
The practice of meditation is often described to improve overall wellbeing during and after a meditation session, along with long-term outcomes on improved quality of life. Especially if new to the practice, learn how to meditate here.

9. Play with Animals
Whether you have a pet of your own or interact with stray animals at a local Humane Society, playing with animals has renowned mental benefits. Animals can help us emotionally, psychologically, and socially, including relieving day-to-day stress, boosting moods, expanding social interactions, and reducing feelings of loneliness.

10. Eat Well
While sweet treats and delicacies can be enjoyed from time-to-time, fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to live a happy and healthy life. Incorporate more whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and healthy fat sources in your daily diet to maximize your health.

11. Exercise
Not only does exercising extend years on life, but enriches the time you gain. Physical activity combats against chronic diseases, wards off depression, improves sleep, and boosts mood, all of which are ways to improve quality of life.

12. Walk
Physical activity is much more than structured trips to the gym... The simple act of walking can also increase physical health, relieve anxiety, and boost your mood. Aim for at least 10,000 steps per day, along with walking and getting out in nature, as spending time outside is one of the most consistent ways to enhance booth physical and mental wellbeing.

13. Try A Digital Detox
In a technologically advancing society, much of our time is connected to screens, though this also disconnects us from living life in a richer, purer form. Trying a digital detox and detaching from electronics can allow us to reconnect with loved ones and even ourselves to produce memories, improve mental health, and enhance quality of life.

14. Socialize
And not just by scrolling social media newsfeeds... But actually socialize with others face-to-face. Social connectedness lessens feelings of loneliness and isolation, subsequently improving quality of life throughout all generations.

15. Sleep
Sleep (or the lack thereof) can truly make or break your day, compromising our cognition, performance, and mood. Improve quality of life by sleeping the recommended seven to nine hours on a regular basis or taking a 20-minute power nap.

16. Set Goals
Small, large, and anywhere in between, set goals for you to tackle. Goals can be tied to learning something new, running more often, and any other ambitions you might have and want to achieve. Accomplishing goals of all sizes allows us to grow a deeper, more intellectual mindset and explore life with excitement.

17. Get Organized
Ah, what a breath of fresh air getting organized is! Rather than living in chaos and clutter, try to get as organized as possible. Doing so allows greater structure and lowers feelings of anxiety.

18. Conquer Fears
Okay, you do not have to swim with the sharks per se... But living in fear can lead to negative feelings of isolation and anxiety. Break out of your comfort zone and dip your toes in the world we call life!
