The Best and Worst Times to Go Grocery Shopping

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... to go grocery shopping! To the best and freshest selection or to dodge the crowd, find out when (or not) to head to the store!

The Best and Worst Times to Go Grocery Shopping

Best Time to Grocery Shop

For Sales
Sale weeks are primarily accustomed to geographical areas, though Sunday and Wednesday are claimed to be the best days to grocery shop for the highest discounts. However, take advantage of internet resources and grocery stores ads, making sure to shop as soon as they come out to lessen the risk of stock being dwindled or gone later on in the week. You can also get the inside scoop on regular and special sales from department and store managers.

For the Best Selection
The early bird catches not only the worm, but the freshest and finest one! Early to mid-morning time is when dairy, meat and seafood, baked goods, produce, etc. are freshly stocked. Along with offering information regarding sales and promotions, managers can also provide specifics regarding shipments of the freshest foods.

To Dodge the Crowd
Early mornings and weekend evenings are suggested to be the quietest times for grocery shopping. So after a well-balanced breakfast, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the peace of a morning store run or following dinner, when individuals tend to unwind after a long workday.

Worst Time to Grocery Shop

While Hungry
Perhaps one of the worst times to grocery shop is not based on crowds or sales... but when hunger strikes! Going shopping while hungry can not only lead to longer trips to the store, but a fuller cart of items you did not necessarily intend to purchase. If grocery shopping leading up to mealtime, choose a nutritious option to snack on in between, including Greek yogurt, a piece of fruit, or a cheese stick.

When Tired
Like being hungry, shopping while tired is also discouraged. Plummeted energy levels can cause forgetfulness and perhaps another trip to the store. Additionally, people tend to crave less-than-nutritious food items when tired, increasing the risk of sugar and fat-laden snacks and desserts to be carried out in a grocery bag.

During Rush Hour
Although weekday evenings can be one of the best times to grocery shop, it is important to head to the store after rush hour. Not only do stores tend to be crowded, but you are more likely to be hungry and tired following a long workday. Sunday mornings following church and significant game days are also known to be busy times at the store.

Healthy Grocery Store Tips

Make a List
Along with heading to the store with a full and satisfied belly, make and craft a list. Not only does it direct and flow your grocery store run more efficiently, but lessens the risk of grabbing unpredicted items and spending more money than anticipated. Researching the ads prior and basing meals and lists on sales items can also keep your wallet fuller.

Shop the Perimeter
As a general rule, shop the perimeter of the grocery store. The entrance and border tends to feature colorful produce, meats, milk and dairy products, and other fresh products. The aisles can also offer nutritious items, just be sure to take advantage of the ingredient label and stay weary of added sugar, sodium, and oils. Sticking to products with less than five ingredients identified is also encouraged.

Use Self-Checkouts
Use a self-checkout if offered, as most common checkout and register lines are loaded with temptations for impulse buys even in the absence of hunger. Utilizing a self-checkout can reduce the urge to grab candy, chips, and other convenience snacks.
