Rapid Diet Programs: Avoid At All Cost

Rapid Diet Programs

By Jessica Cederquist

With each passing day, more and more Americans are searching for a way to lose their unwanted pounds. The first idea that many think is that "it’s easy; I just need to eat less". Unfortunately, this idea is false, unhealthy, and dangerous.

The most common rapid diet programs are fad diets. Fad diets include crazy ideas such as the cabbage diet, the cookie diet, the lemonade diet, and even some of the most recognized national diet programs. These diets are focused solely on omitting certain food groups, and cutting calories. These omissions lead to dietary deficiency, permanent damage to your body, and usually result in the regain of the weight initially lost.

The American Academy of Family Physicians states that weight loss is best achieved not through rapid diets programs, but instead by following a healthy weight loss program that includes:

Eating breakfast every day and not skipping meals.

Eating a variety of foods (including plenty of whole grains, vegetables and fruits) to ensure that you get all of your daily nutrients.

Limit your daily intake of saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

Limit the amount of sugar in your diet. High-sugar foods are often high in calories and low in nutrients.

Limit liquid calories. Avoid sugary soda, alcohol, and juices (choose whole fruits instead).

Watch the size of your portions. Use the nutrition label to determine the proper portion size.

Exercise on a regular basis. The best kind of exercise is exercise that you'll keep doing, so choose an activity that you enjoy. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes, 4 to 6 times per week.

Be more physically active in your daily life. Park farther away from the door, and take the stairs, when you can. Get a pedometer, or step counter, and gradually work up to taking 10,000 steps per day.

In your search for the perfect diet, look for one that emphasizes eating all of the food groups, in correct portions and serving sizes, and that offers dietary help for proper weight loss. Make sure it fits your life style. Healthy, sustainable, weight loss can be achieved. Just cut the fad, and eat the food.
