Health Benefits of Weight Loss: There's More Than You Might Think
For decades, many people have struggled to lose weight. This is despite the fact that having excess weight can lead to many serious health problems. There are many health benefits of weight loss that can lead to a better lifestyle.
Heart disease is the number one killer in America and is very serious. Gaining weight bombards the body with excess cholesterol which begins lining the arteries and causes gradual narrowing of, and damage to, the heart muscles. According to the National Institutes of Health, losing just 10% of your total body weight can lower your risk of heart disease and other conditions associated with obesity.
Where you carry your fat on your body also affects the body in different ways. If you carry your fat around your stomach you have a greater chance of developing heart risks rather than a person carrying fat around your hips and thighs. If you don’t reach your weight loss goal, don’t be distressed, because each pound lost adds yet another health benefit of weight loss.
Diabetes almost comes hand in hand when it comes to being overweight. By dropping the pounds, you lower your blood sugar, improve your health, and feel better overall. The American Diabetes Association states that losing just 10 to 15 pounds could reduce blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and lighten the stress on hips, knees, ankles and feet. These are just some of the health benefits of weight loss when it comes to diabetes.
Health benefits of weight loss go well beyond heart conditions and blood flow. Losing weight can also improve sexual functions in men. Italian scientists have discovered that the millions of men that suffer from erectile dysfunction, or ED, could see their conditions improve by just losing weight.
The Italian study involved 110 obese men between 35-55 years of age that suffered from ED. They were put through a program of healthy eating and exercise to help them lose 10% or more of their body weight. Two years later, the study group had lost an average of 33 pounds and became more physically active and about 1/3 of them had seen a significant improvement in sexual function.
Earlier studies had shown that men who stand at normal weight, and are physically active, are at a lower risk for ED. Simply losing weight is a better alternative than surgery or medications. Losing weight can improve blood flow not only to the heart but also to other organs, including the penis.
As you can see, three major health problems can be alleviated via the health benefits of weight loss. Remember that ANY weight loss will help you in creating a healthier lifestyle. There are so many health benefits of weight loss that the possibilities are endless.
