A Cycling Workout: Pedal Your Way to a Better Body
When it comes to thinking outside of the box for your next workout, cycling may be a good way for you to start exploring the sites, and the health benefits of this intense, but relaxing activity.
“After being cooped up in the office all day, a cycling workout is one of the most effective ways to burn calories, and to enjoy the outdoors,” says Sean Wells, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and the fitness expert at BistroMD. “In addition to being a great way to burn calories, cycling is also a very fun and fulfilling physical activity.”
To help you pedal your way toward a better body, our fitness expert explains how to properly utilize the benefits of cycling, while showing you how to keep things interesting.
Take it Outside
Although spinning may sound ideal for the typical business person after a day at the office, getting on your bike and pedaling outdoors can help you develop your ideal shape, while stimulating your sense of adventure.
“Cycling outdoors is a great way to burn calories and to get some much-needed fresh air,” says Sean. “Cycling can be done along a Greenway, along the beach, or through trails. This makes the ride much more interesting and refreshing.”
When practicing a cycling workout outdoors, you can make the activity even more challenging by steering around trees, pumping over hills, and weaving around various objects.
This pushes your balance and increases the difficulty of your workout.
The Beauty of Utilization
“Besides being effective at burning calories and toning certain muscles, a cycling workout can be utilized in almost every aspect of your life,” says Sean.
Society today is based around one key thing: convenience. Even though a car may be your most reliable and convenient source of transportation, get around town by cycling to your destinations every once in a while.
“Americans fall victim to the convenience of urban sprawl and to suburban lifestyle too much,” says Sean. “Instead of constantly relying on a car, consider biking to work or using your bike to run errands if you live within a reasonable distance.”
By biking to work, you will take away the stress of worrying about when to fit in your daily workout. You have to get to work somehow, so why not cycle to get there?
No Special Skills Required
“The other great thing about a cycling workout is that it doesn’t require special skills to get great results,” says Sean. “You also don’t need to buy expensive equipment to reach your fitness goals.”
If you feel more comfortable cycling indoors, then a stationary bike may be ideal for you. They aren’t expensive, don’t require a lot of room, and are still a very convenient way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.
“Having a stationary bike in your home is a great excuse for you to incorporate more leisurely activities into your workout,” says Sean. “While cycling, many people can still watch TV, read a book, or watch a movie. You can participate in leisurely activities while still breaking a sweat.”
Cycling is also a great way to introduce your body to other core exercises as you start to develop your endurance over time.
“Once you master your cycling workout, you can easily start incorporating other exercises into your routine,” says Sean. “Over time, your endurance will grow stronger, allowing for continuous bouts of cardio exercises and more strength-training activities.”
Overall, a cycling workout can help you burn calories, as well as give you a healthy workout that requires no special skills, and that is very effective.
