What You Should Be Eating if You Want to Lose Weight

It is well-known weight loss largely occurs when calories out exceed calories in. What You Should Be Eating if You Want to Lose Weight

It is well-known weight loss largely occurs when calories out exceed calories in. But with the continuous work required for calorie counting in such a fast-paced society, adding one more task to the list may pose overwhelming feelings and discourage its participation. And though weight loss does require effort on your part, bistroMD believes there is a less demanding method to achieve goals without writing down one more "to-do" item. With the incorporation of low-glycemic and high-protein foods, subtracting weight can be achieved without adding up calories!

What You Should Be Eating If You Want to Lose Weight

Simply put, the glycemic index (GI) is simply a measure of the rise of blood sugar after consuming carb-containing food sources. A number scale (0 to 100) is used to rank how fast carbohydrate in food turns into sugar in the human body - pure glucose or sugar has a glycemic index of 100. The index is broken down in low, medium, and high GI's - a low GI is 55 or less, a medium GI is 56 to 69, and a high GI is 70 or greater. It is considered to be a useful tool for individuals managing blood sugars and even weight, primarily when selecting low-GI and carb-containing sources. Taking the glycemic a step further, the glycemic load (GL) entails both the GI and carb-content of foods.

But one of the key criticisms of implementing the glycemic index is based on the total meal plate, as a variety of foods do (and should) exist. And according to a recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, low-glycemic foods paired with high-protein sources may be the best foods to eat for weight loss. Core findings coming from the study include increasing intakes of...

...high GL foods from refined grains, starches, and sugars were associated with more weight gain.

...red and processed meats were strongly associated with weight gain, while pairing red meat with a vegetable mitigated some of the weight gain. Find just how much you should be eating here.

...yogurt, seafood, skinless chicken, and nuts were most strongly associated with weight loss and the more people ate, the less weight they gained. And when eggs and cheese were consumed with low GL foods, participants actually lost weight.

...other dairy products, including both whole milk and low-fat milk, did not significantly correlate with either weight gain or loss.
