BistroMD’s founding physician, Caroline J. Cederquist, M.D., was recently featured as a guest columnist in a recent edition of The Boomer Brief.
The column, "Lose Weight with Your Plate" was featured on the publication’s website, and focuses on the need for a different type of “My Plate” for Baby Boomers who are overweight.
In the column, Dr. Cederquist explains how the USDA’s new “My Plate” is a step in the right direction, but how it doesn’t cater to those people who need to lose weight.
“To shed those extra pounds while still eating a satisfying and healthy diet, you need a ‘weight loss plate’ like the one I developed working with BistroMD dietitians and experts,” says Dr. Cederquist.
Even though it has the same look and feel of the current “My Plate” the weight loss plate developed by Dr. Cederquist is a weight-loss plan that recommends meals made up of: non-starchy vegetables, protein, and fruit and healthy starches. Instead of a serving of dairy, like the regular “My Plate,” Dr. Cederquist’s weight loss plate recommends drinking a glass of water with every meal instead.
In her years of experience as an expert in weight loss, Dr. Cederquist knows the important role of protein and healthy fats. In order to lose weight, she recommends devoting a quarter of your plate to protein. This includes foods like: chicken, turkey, fish, lean pork, lean beef or dairy products such as cottage cheese or eggs.
When it comes to portion sizes, Dr. Cederquist has a helpful recommendation. “Select a plate that’s about 10 inches in diameter, and drink a glass of water with your food.”
