Maintaining Your Wedding Weight

Maintaining Your Wedding Weight

Brides the world over work very hard to reach an ideal wedding weight so they will be stunning on their wedding day. As the center of attention on this celebratory day, it’s no wonder that brides diet for weeks so that they’ll look their best. There certainly seems to be an endless selection of diets for brides to help them reach their ideal weight. For many of these brides, the true test is how to maintain their wedding weight long past the actual big day. BistroMD has a few tips for brides, and even grooms, to help them maintain a healthy weight after their wedding.

First of all, avoid fad diets. In preparation for your wedding we understand that diets promising rapid weight loss are very appealing. Unfortunately, fad and crash diets really only offer short-term solutions to your weight concerns. Any diet that makes unrealistic weight loss goals will probably help you slim down, but these diets, and thus your wedding weight, cannot be maintained. In fact, one rarely discussed side effect of fad diets is the fact that weight is regained quickly and many people even gain more. Fad diets rely on unhealthy shortcuts, such as use of appetite suppressants, that teach you nothing about healthy living. By avoiding certain foods or taking dangerous supplements, you may be able to lose weight but the weight will return once you’re off the diet. Plus, weight loss achieved by using fad diets is usually the result of loss of muscle or water. When we want to get trim and healthy we want to lose fat, not muscle.

So, instead of trying a crash diet, one of the best things you can do to maintain your weight is to learn to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, and lean meats and reduce your intake of fatty or sugar-filled foods. The basic principle of weight loss is to burn more calories than you consume. Healthy foods tend to be lower in calories, thus facilitating weight loss. And, by developing a healthy diet you are teaching yourself the skills you’ll need to maintain your weight. The healthiest and safest diets are those that take a gradual approach to weight loss. If you gradually lose weight (no more than 1 or 2 pounds per week), you’re giving yourself the time you need to learn how to prepare healthy and delicious foods. Then you can use what you’ve learned about food to help you maintain your wedding weight.

Finally, any good diet will recommend regular physical activity. Exercise can help you maintain your weight in a variety of ways. First of all, regular exercise can actually be an appetite suppressant. Secondly, exercising will gradually increase our energy levels so we can continue to burn calories. And finally, as part of a healthy diet, exercise will help us keep our mind on fitness. By making smart, healthy choices you’ll find maintaining your wedding weight is well within your abilities.
