BistroMD’s Founding Physician Supports Position Statement against the Use of HCG Products
NAPLES, FL--Caroline J. Cederquist, M.D., a board certified physician in the field of healthy weight management, and the founding physician of BistroMD, the weight loss program that provides delicious meals for a lighter healthier you, is supporting the recommendation by the FDA and obesity experts to remove HCG weight loss products from the market.
Recently, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians released a position statement regarding the FDA’s recommendation of banning HCG weight loss products from the market. ASBP Trustee and spokesperson, Craig Primack, M.D., said on behalf of the board: “As a society, we continually strive to find better weight loss treatments. Obesity is a chronic disease which is best treated by a physician who specializes in weight loss and practices medicine based on sound scientific principles. Unfortunately, HCG does not live up to those standards.”
As a member of the ASBP, and as a former Trustee herself, Dr. Cederquist supports the board’s position statement against the use of HCG as an effective method of weight loss and as a treatment for obesity.
“I agree whole-heartedly with the ASBP’s position regarding the HCG Diet,” says Dr. Cederquist. “Not only is the diet’s lack of nutrition dangerous, but there is no scientific evidence that indicates injections of HCG hormones promote weight loss.”
Instead of injections of HCG promoting weight loss, users of the diet lose weight due to the extremely low 500 calorie per day diet. This isn’t a healthy or sustainable method of weight loss, as the body doesn’t get enough nutrition to sustain such a drastic change in weight.
“Instead of losing excess body fat, you lose muscle mass on this diet,” says Dr. Cederquist. “This is not a sustainable method of weight loss, as the loss of muscle mass leads to a decrease in your metabolic rate.”
This depletion of muscle mass is likely due to the nutrient deficiencies that come from consuming just 500 calories per day.
“As a practicing weight loss physician for over 15 years, my recommended approach to weight loss often is less about prescribing drugs and medication, and more about diagnosing the underlying metabolic issues present through a formal evaluation, blood tests, and other testing methods,” says Dr. Cederquist. “I also teach my patients the importance of proper nutrition when it comes to weight loss.
