Health Risks of Obesity

Health Risks of Obesity

You may have noticed, but Americans are quickly gaining size. It used to be that the average size was much smaller than it is today. Now, however, they are making larger seats in airplanes and larger portions at restaurants. The public is swiftly becoming large enough that it is starting to effect our health. There are many health risks of obesity, and many of them are preventable if the right diet and exercise program is followed.

One of the first health risks of obesity is heart disease. This is one of the more serious health risks, and affect a wide majority of the population. People who are seriously overweight have a much larger chance of having high blood pressure, which is one of the major risk factors of getting a form of heart disease. People with high blood pressure are also much more likely to have a stroke. Obese people often have chest pain due to a lack of oxygen getting to the heart. This is called angina and can become serious, as it is one of the warning signs of heart trouble.

Sleep apnea is another one of the health risks of obesity. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing in the middle of your rest period. This means that you lie down, fall asleep, and stop breathing without knowing it. Most often, people with sleep apnea tend to snore very loudly and may be tired during the day, because they are not getting a good nights rest when they fall asleep. This can cause heart failure and is very often a direct result of being very overweight.

Many overweight people find that they have diabetes. Type 2 diabetes has become the type of diabetes that is most often seen in the US, mostly due to our collective growing girth. It can cause a host of other medical problems, such as kidney disease, heart disease, and blindness. It is a fact that people who are overweight are twice as likely to have diabetes as people who are not overweight. This is definitely one of the health risks of obesity that nobody wants to have.

Another of the health risks that is preventable is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a joint disorder that makes anywhere that has joints, such as the knees, hips and back, feel painful. This is because the body has extra weight on it that it is not prepared to deal with, so it causes stress on these points on the body. It can get serious enough that people have a very difficult time moving around without assistance.

One of the worst things about the health risks of obesity is that they are avoidable. People who lose 5 to 10% of their body weight lower their health risks of obesity by a large percentage. It can be hard, however, to change your entire way of life in one day. This is where BistroMD comes in.
