Carbohydrate Counters for Weight Loss

Carbohydrate or carb counting is an encouraged meal planning technique to manage blood sugar or glucose levels. But carb counting helps individuals identify and track carbohydrates consumed not only for blood sugar management, but can help those desiring weight loss. And thanks to technology, mobile carbohydrate counter apps can transform weight loss thoughts into real-world realities.

Carbohydrate Counters for Weight Loss

Carb Counting 101

Whether desiring blood sugar control or weight loss, it is important to establish and recognize which foods actually contain carbs. While most breads and cereals are already recognized members of the carb club, sources are rather diverse and include the following:

• Grains (oats, rice, wheat, barley, etc.) and grain-based foods, including bread, cereal, and pasta
• Starchy vegetables such as potatoes, peas, and corn
• Non-starchy vegetables, including lettuce, broccoli, and cucumbers
• Fruits and fruit juices
• Milk and dairy products, including cheese and yogurt
• Legumes, including beans, soy, and lentil
• Sweets such as soda, cake, cookies, chips, and candy

Though carb counting helps allow all foods fit into the diet, primarily by identifying the amount of carbs consumed, reducing sugary products is highly encouraged. Along with staying attentive to the carb source, most nutrition experts recommended consuming no more than 45 to 60 grams of carbs per meal while snacks should also be limited to 15 to 20 grams of carbs. Three meals and one to two snacks are suggested to span across the day.

Individuals can identify the portion of carbs in products in the Nutrition Facts label, but particularly paying close attention to the serving size. And in addition to utilizing the label, the following foods contain approximately 15 grams of carbs per serving. Although recognizing carb intake is imperative, one must not forget about the significance and contribution of protein and fat. Individuals are encouraged to consume both lean and plant-based proteins while swapping out saturated and trans fats with healthful oils, nuts, and seeds.
