Hummus vs Salsa
We all love to dip. We dip cookies into milk, fries into ketchup, carrots into ranch, and the list goes on and on. A lot of times, all that dipping adds up to extra calories and fat content real fast. Especially when you think what your dipping healthy, people tend to mindlessly dip for too long. It’s good to know what dip is healthiest that way you're not unknowingly ruining your diet.
Salsa is one of the very most popular dips around. It can be found at any Tex-Mex or Mexican restaurant along with more than a few others. Salsa is popular on game days, at cookouts, and parties of all kinds.
Hummus is a newer dip on the scene that is growing in popularity due its assortment of flavors and uses.
So which is healthier? The classic Salsa or the trendy Hummus?
That depends on a few things. Salsa has fewer calories and grams of fat because it’s made of only vegetables. Hummus is creamy and has more grams of fat but there are healthful fats from olive oil and other ingredients in hummus that up the nutritional gain. But what it really comes down to is what’s being dipped.
If you’re dipping tortilla chips into salsa, which you most likely are, you’re getting added calories, fat, and sodium. In comparison, if you’re dipping carrots, celery, and other veggies into hummus, you’re getting added nutrients. Dipping pita into the hummus changes the story.
If you’re choosing between the two, it seems hummus with veggies is the way to go. Or choose unsalted corn tortilla chips to accompany your salsa.
In the case of salsa versus hummus— don’t blame the dip, blame the dipped.
