The Importance of Healthy Eating Habits for Young Adults

As a young adult, healthy eating habits help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Making healthy food choices is harder than expected, because the majority of our food choices are based on pleasure. In fact, eating is such an enjoyable experience that we choose to eat foods that taste good, rather than eating foods that make us feel good. We also enjoy food so much that we eat more than our bodies actually need.

Being overweight can affect your child's self-esteem and can increase the risk of diabetes, joint and bone problems, heart disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and social and psychological problems. The number one thing to do is avoid unhealthy foods like junk foods, because they have a high salt content and various other chemicals such as preservatives, colorings, and artificial sweeteners.

There are many reasons why a teen can be overweight, including family history, overeating, lack of exercise, and depression. At a young age it’s important to start a healthy lifestyle because it can affect the rest of your life.

To motivate young adults to make better choices for healthy eating habits in a world dominated by soda and sugar, I would first introduce the subject of dieting. Explain the importance of healthy eating habits. It’s also sometimes motivating to change your eating habits with a friend, so you can work together in motivating one another. Then set goals, the weight you want to reach, and the amount of exercise you plan to do a week. If it helps, make a day planner, and add a column where you list all the foods and activities you should avoid.

Eating healthy isn't an easy task. As you work your way to your goals, take time to reward yourself whenever you reach specific milestones. Once you've indulged in your reward activity of choice, there'll be no stopping how often you want that kind of treat; it's one of the best motivators out there. If you blow it, don't give up. Take a deep breath. Remember that it’s okay to make mistakes. It's not the end of the world. Keep going, don’t give up.

Developing healthy eating habits should not be a stressful experience. Have fun tasting lots of new and different healthy foods. Make this a pleasant journey.
