Healthy Food For a Lighter You

Healthy Food For a Lighter You

Have you tried every fad diet or weight loss program out there, but to no avail? Do you want to try something new that works? Or are you just looking to improve your overall health?  If you answered yes to any of the above questions, increasing your knowledge about healthy food is a great starting place.

Healthy living starts on the plate.  With proper nutrition and the right amount of exercise, you can lose weight and improve your overall health.

However, with new food products emerging everyday offering fewer calories or less fat, it is hard to know what is actually good for you and what foods are just all talk.  This constant bombardment of different food alternatives makes healthy food more important, but also harder to recognize. This article should help you make that distinction.

What to eat

Healthy foods provide your body with nutrients needed for survival.  If the food you are eating has no nutritional value, don’t eat it!  While this is by no means a full list of healthy foods, it should be used as a starting point. Modify it to fit your lifestyle.

      - Vegetables.  You’ve been told ever since you were a child to eat your vegetables, yet very few of us actually do.  Vegetables provide your body with key nutrients such as fiber and vitamin A.  Additionally, they are typically low in calories and can even be hidden in your favorite foods so you barely even taste them—but get all of the nutritional benefits.  Start today by adding in a vegetable to as many meals as you can.

      - Complex Carbohydrates.  The idea that all carbs are bad is simply not true.  Complex carbs such as whole grains, oatmeal and nuts help keep your body full while supplying a host of nutrients to your body.  For more information about complex carbs read this.

      - Protein.  Lean protein whether animal based or not, is a healthy food staple.  The amino acids found in protein are the building blocks for your body.  Eating protein from lean cuts of fish and animals or from high-protein grains such as quinoa will help you live a healthy life.

Other healthy foods include fruits, healthy fats from sources such as avocados and olive oil, and water.  Remember if the food does not benefit your body and overall health, it would be wise to choose an alternative.

What to avoid

No discussion about healthy food is complete without mentioning the opposite—unhealthy food.  If you are looking to improve your diet for health or other personal reasons, there are some unhealthy foods that you should avoid.  Not only are most of these foods full of calories, but they also offer little to no nutritional benefits.

Reduce or eliminate your consumption of these foods

      - Soda.  Regular soda is full of empty calories and diet soda, while void of calories, is not much better.  Regular consumption of soda increases the chemicals and unnatural substances in your body.  Additionally weight gain and cavities are common among soda drinkers.

      - Fast food.  Most fast foods are high in carbohydrates, fat, salt and sugar.  This combination can lead to excess weight gain and even obesity.  Additional consequences of eating fast food include depression and sexual dysfunction.

Knowing what to eat and what to avoid is important for living a healthy lifestyle.  However, healthy food alone will not make you a healthy person.  Make smart exercise and life choices for maximum benefit.  Also remember that change does not occur overnight. It’s better to gradually incorporate healthy food into your diet as you phase out the unhealthy food.
