It’s important to eat foods high in protein because proteins are part of every cell, tissue and organ in our bodies and protein is absolutely necessary to build and maintain our body’s structures like our muscles, tendons, ligaments our circulatory system, brain, organs, immune system and skin.

Protein and weight-loss

If there are insufficient carbohydrates and protein in the food you eat, your body will break down lean body tissue for the proteins it needs and convert them to carbohydrates for energy.  If there is a deficiency of protein, however, your body will basically eat its lean mass for the energy to burn its fat mass.

This is why it’s so important to eat meals with foods high in protein throughout the day. You don’t want your body to turn to lean tissues for energy.

To add more delicious protein into your diet, try these foods high in protein.

The number one sources of protein

Keep in mind that these foods won’t be helpful unless you eat the proper portion sizes.

      - Meat

Meat has always been the go-to source of protein for the human diet. Generally, meats that are low in fat are high in protein.

      - Fish

Fish is an excellent addition to any diet. It’s not only high in protein, but it’s also high in many other nutrients, like omega-3’s.

      - Nuts

Nuts are also high in protein. Nuts are a great snack to have on hand throughout the day and they have many health benefits as well.

      - Dairy products

Dairy products such as eggs, milk and cheese all contain protein, but in varying amounts.

      - Beans

Beans are one of the most popular foods that are high in protein and low in fat. Within this category are a number of soy-based meat substitutes like tofu and tempeh, all of which are made from bean sources and are rich in protein.

One snack only costs $1.50 and the number of snacks you receive per day is based on your gender. Women receive two snacks per day and men receive three snacks per day.
