It’s no myth that healthy eating can be expensive. Many people scoff at the idea of an organic diet or even just at buying fresh fruits and vegetables because those clear plastic bags really start to add up. As with any other item at the grocery store, knowing exactly which healthy foods to buy can end up saving you a few bucks.

Here are 5 healthy foods that each cost under $1.00. That’s right—healthy eating for less than the price of a pack of gum.


Apples are great for snacking, green salads, fruit salads, and a number of other side dishes and snacks.

1 large apple is a serving that comes in at just about $1. Vitamin C and 5 grams of fiber make this a favorite fruit.

Yogurt (lowfat or fat-free)

Yogurt is delicious in smoothies, yogurt parfait, dips, and as dressings on salads.

An 8-ounce container is about one serving and it only costs you 60 cents. Lots of calcium and 13 grams of protein make yogurt a great snacking choice.


Bananas are yummy snacks to go, or in fruit salads, yogurt parfaits, and smoothies.

1 banana makes up a serving and could cost you as little as 45 cents. Potassium and Vitamin C make bananas worth your half dollar.

Baby Carrots

Carrots are fun as snacks, in casseroles, stews, veggie platters and side dishes.

About 1/2 cup or 2 ounces raw make up a serving and only set you back 19 cents. Vitamin A, Vitamin C and a very small amount of calories make carrots the perfect treat for rabbits and people.

Canned Beans

Canned beans are perfect in green salads, casseroles, stews, and chili. Find the kidney and black beans with 50% less sodium or enjoy white beans and garbanzo beans.

Each can contains about 3.5 servings which means a serving runs for a little as 28 cents.7 grams protein, 6 grams fiber, along with calcium and iron make your quarter go a long way.
