Diet Trends Not to Follow in 2012

Diet Trends Not to Follow in 2012

It’s the first week of the new year, and you are super excited to get started on your New Year’s Resolution.

For many of us, it often involves going on a diet or doing everything we can to live a healthier lifestyle.

Sometimes, though, this desire to fulfill our biggest goals can turn into desperation, shifting the focus in our brain from progression and adjustment, to fast-paced success.

Often, this desire to see results more rapidly can cause us to seek out solutions that may not be the best for our health. In order to avoid these unhealthy pitfalls of losing weight, here are some diet trends you should avoid in 2012.

1. Supplements, supplements, supplements

While some supplements can help you lose weight, most should not be taken alone, or with a restricted diet.

When it comes to dieting, be weary of marketing promises like “rapid weight loss and incredible energy.”

Many of these supplements can have as much caffeine as 12 cans of coke, and do little to nothing to promote effective and long-term weight loss.

Many times, they can cause uncomfortable side effects like migraines and diarrhea, and can also cause more serious side effects like stoke and heart attack. Remember: It’s best to always consult with your physician before starting any diet or weight loss program.

2. Living at the Gym

Most fitness gurus will tell you that you need to work out constantly in order to lose weight, but this is not the case.

While being physically active is an important part of any healthy diet, it is not essential in order for you to shed unwanted pounds.

Your diet is what promotes a healthy metabolism. Eating the right diet will help you burn excess body fat, not eating whatever you want and then working out six days a week.

Instead of living at the gym, develop a more realistic exercise plan. In conjunction with the right diet, try working out five days each week for about 30 minutes. If you don’t think you can make it to the gym this many days, go for about 3 days instead, for about an hour instead of 30 minutes.

To keep things interesting, mix your workout with weights and cardio for more variety. An hour total is really all you need to get fit while you are on a diet.

3. Fasting Your Life Away

Just like supplements, you want to avoid fasting completely when it comes to going on a diet.

Fasting is not a healthy way to live, nor is it a healthy way to lose weight. Fasting diets actually have the opposite effect of what you want from a diet. Instead of losing body fat, the lack of nutrition you get from a fasting diet will actually cause your body to lose valuable muscle mass instead.

Naturally, we get energy from food, or in terms of nutrition, calories. Calories are what gives our body energy, and without them, we shrivel up like a prune.

A healthy metabolism is energized through a healthy diet of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. This comes in the form of calories we take in, and without calories, or with a restricted amount, we simply retain fat instead of losing it. The numbers on the scale may drop, but that’s only because you are losing valuable muscle mass instead of the fat you are trying to get rid of.

So if you want to get healthy quick, just remember: all good things take time, so don’t rush your weight loss at the price of losing your health.
