It is estimated that 83% of Americans who have celiac disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions and 6-10 years is the average amount of time that a person waits to get diagnosed.

Digestive problems are not fun. They can hinder your daily routines, but they are NOT something that you’re just stuck with. If you’re living with a constantly upset stomach, you may have celiac disease or you may not, but the only way to know for sure is to go see your doctor and you should NOT wait 6-10 years to do so.

Celiac who?

PubMed explains that celiac disease, or gluten allergy, is a medical illness that causes damage to the lining of the small intestine and can be treated with a gluten-free diet.  This damage causes an internal reaction to gluten and prevents the intestine from absorbing vital nutrients needed to stay in good health.  For this reason, people with a gluten allergy or celiac disease must avoid foods containing wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats, but don’t worry if you’re one of the 141 Americans who has the disease (this number is from 2011 statistics), a gluten-free diet is not that bad.

If you consume a lot of gluten products like bread, pasta or beer and your body just feels off or constantly depleted of energy, you should go see your doctor. It’s good to know what’s wrong with your body so it can get better. If you think you have celiac disease and you dread changing your diet, feel better knowing that there are many gluten-free options available at restaurants and grocery stores that are just as good as the “real thing”.

Where did it come from and how do I know if I have it?

Unfortunately, the exact cause of celiac disease is unknown and a gluten allergy can develop at any time in a person’s life.  Although a person who has family members with celiac disease or a gluten allergy is more susceptible to developing the condition, some groups are more susceptible to it than others. Caucasians and those with European ancestry have a greater risk for a gluten allergy and there is also a higher incidence of celiac disease and gluten allergy among women.

The symptoms of gluten allergies vary in each person.  Symptoms may include the following:

      - Abdominal pain

      - Bloating, gas, or indigestion

      - Changes in appetite

      - Diarrhea

      - Lactose Intolerance

      - Nausea/vomiting

      - Stools that float, smell foul, or are bloody or fatty

      - Unexplained weight loss

      - Bruising

      - Depression

      - Anxiety

      - Fatigue

      - Hair loss

      - Itchy skin

      - Missed periods

      - Mouth ulcers

      - Joint pain/muscle cramps

      - Nosebleeds

      - Seizures

      - Numbness/tingling in hands or feet

The bad news is that there is no cure for a gluten allergy or celiac disease, but the good news is that symptoms can be kept under control and even eliminated by following a gluten-free diet.
