Why Gluten Free Diets are Easier than You Think

Why Gluten Free Diets are Easier than You Think

Gluten-free diets are free of gluten, which is a type of protein found in wheat, rye, and barley.  People with celiac disease and gluten allergies find that gluten-free diets are beneficial to their health and well-being.

Gluten-free diets require a person to look carefully at their food labels because they can often be misleading.  They need to make sure to avoid foods labeled with wheat, wheat gluten, barley and rye.  They also need to pay attention to sneaky types of gluten such as malt and hydrolyzed vegetable protein. WebMD provides some helpful hints for gluten-free diets.

People wishing to benefit from gluten-free diets should forgo the following:

Most bread products.  White, wheat, marble and rye bread are completely off-limits.  Muffins, bagels, croissants, buns and even pizza crust should be avoided as well.  Some bread, if made with rice or potato flour, is a safe substitute for traditional bread and sometimes, it can taste better too.

Most breakfast cereals.  Gluten-free shoppers should carefully check each label to find gluten-free bread and cereal products.   As an alternative, corn and rice-based cereals are an option for breakfast in gluten-free diets, and it should be noted, however, that these cereals may contain malt, so make sure to pay close attention to the food label.

Pasta.  Pasta is usually made out of wheat; therefore, those looking for gluten-free diets should avoid any type of pasta.

Breaded meats.  Instead of breaded chicken nuggets and battered fish, gluten-free diets can include lean meats without additives and breading.  It should also be noted that hot dogs and deli meats may contain gluten because they are processed so carefully read the label before including these foods into your gluten-free diet.

Crackers, chips and many sweet pastries like cookies and cakes.  Most contain wheat flour.   Look for marshmallows and hard candies and investigate whether or not local bakeries or grocery stores sell any gluten-free sweet treats because sweets are not impossible in gluten-free diets.

Most beers.   The majority of beers are made with malt.  However, there are alcohol options for those on gluten-free diets.  Check labels carefully and consider hard ciders, wines and liquors.

When shopping for gluten-free products, a helpful place to start is in the grocery store’s gluten-free or health food section.   There shoppers will find clearly labeled gluten-free options.   Look for rice crackers, rice noodles and corn chips to substitute for gluten-full favorites.   A gluten-free diet is like any other healthy diet full of potatoes, rice, eggs, fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and milk.  Keep in mind that any frozen or canned food may contain additives that include gluten so make sure you read those nutrition labels carefully.  The same can be said for processed cheeses and flavored yogurts.

Maintaining gluten-free diets can be challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort.  Gluten-free diets for those who have gluten intolerance or celiac disease can help eliminate gas and bloating, problematic bowel movements, weight loss, fatigue and other weaknesses.   With the right amount of effort and knowledge, those desiring gluten-free diets will find plenty of options to suit their palate.
