You cannot turn on the television or flip through a magazine without reading about the U.S. obesity problem or about some new diet to lose weight. There are various studies and statistics out there and it can all be very confusing. The questions that I often hear people ask is how do you determine what is a healthy weight for you and how do you reach it?
The best way to determine if you are at a healthy weight for your body is to calculate your Body Mass Index or BMI. This can be done with the following easy calculation: Take your weight in pounds and multiply it by 703. Take that number and divide it by your height in inches squared.
For example, if you are 5'5" tall and weigh 170 pounds, this is how your calculation would look:
(170 * 703) / (65 x 65) = BMI of 28
Once you know your BMI, you can then determine what category you fit it, be that ideal weight, overweight, obese, or underweight. In the example above, a BMI of 28 means that person is overweight.
Another way to determine whether you are at a healthy weight, especially if you have a BMI of less than 54 is to measure the circumference of your waist. In women, a waist measurement of over 31 inches indicates a slight health risk, and a waist circumference of over 35 inches indicates substantially increased risk.
If you have determined that you are not currently at a healthy weight and fit into either the overweight or obese category, you should start now to get healthy. As you probably know, those people who are overweight and those who are obese are much more likely to suffer from weight related illnesses. These illnesses include diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. To avoid these diseases, you really do need to get yourself to a healthy weight as soon as you can. You want to lead a long healthy life, so you need to lose weight in order to achieve that.
