Mediterranean Diet Effective in Managing Diabetes

Affecting nearly 1 out of 10 Americans, diabetes continues to rise. Though diabetes has shown to be affective in being controlled through diet, individuals still struggle with maintaining blood sugars within recommended levels. Let's see if the Mediterranean diet may just be the ticket to well-managed diabetes!

Mediterranean Diet Effective in Managing Diabetes

Affecting nearly 1 out of 10 Americans, diabetes continues to rise. If left unmanaged, the chronic disease can be quite destructive to health and create further complications. And though diabetes has been shown to be effectively controlled through diet, individuals still struggle with maintaining blood sugars within recommended levels. The Mediterranean diet may just be the ticket to well-managed diabetes!

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean encourages whole, plant-based foods while emphasizing healthy fats. A further break down includes whole grains and legumes, fresh produce and herbs, seeds and nuts, and olive and canola oils on a daily basis. The diet also supports fish and poultry at least twice a week, dairy products and red wine in moderation, and a low consumption of red meats. The robust vitamin and mineral content complimented by healthy fats, lean proteins, and fiber have shown to be quite beneficial to health, including diabetes management.

Mediterranean Diet and Diabetes

First off, the diet encourages a healthy weight by keeping calories balanced and in check. Since overweight and obese individual are more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, loosing or maintaining weight lessens the likelihood of its development. Even if demonstrating high blood sugars, a modified and healthful diet can reverse the development of diabetes.

But if diagnosed with diabetes, the implementation of a Mediterranean diet continues to show benefits. A recent study suggested that the intake of olive oil may improve post-meal blood sugars. Subjects were randomly chosen to consume either 10 grams of olive oil or 10 grams of corn oil to their meals. The data found subjects assigned to olive oil displayed lowered blood glucose along with an improved glycemic profile. Though the data is still underdeveloped, researchers are now looking at high fat diets (including healthy oils) to control weight and manage blood sugars.

The benefits of the Mediterranean diet do not stop at diabetes prevention and management. In fact, the diet is strongly associated with an extended lifespan by reducing the risk for mortality of various causes. Additionally, it has shown to reduce the heart disease, mostly related to its role in lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol" and improving lipid profiles. The Mediterranean diet has also shown to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer including breast cancer.
