Is BistroMD Safe for Diabetes?

Is BistroMD Safe for Diabetes?

Our meal plan is appropriate for someone with diabetes. Each meal contains a balance of adequate protein, low fat, and low glycemic load foods that are healthy and delicious.

Diabetes and snacking.

Diabetics often wonder if they need to worry about snacking during the day. This dilemma over snacking is either because they are not hungry, or they worry about the extra calories.

This thought process follows the logic that by cutting back on snacks, the weight will melt away faster. BistroMD provides you with the option of adding snacks to your 5 or 7 day meal plan. Eating snacks is important if you are a diabetic, especially if the snacks are high in protein. High protein snacks, like the ones included in your BistroMD meal plan is helps keep your blood sugar stable if you eat them every 3-4 hours. This also ensures your body gets an adequate amount of calories, and prevents your metabolism from slowing down.

What About Medication?

If you are on a medication to treat diabetes, and to lower your blood sugar, you may need a lower dose of medication to avoid hypoglycemia. If you are a diabetic who takes insulin, or oral medications such as sulfonaureas, you need to be very cautious of this as many of these medications cause your body to produce more insulin.

Some diabetic clients have discontinued taking large doses of insulin entirely as they follow the BistroMD meal plan, since this can lead to hypoglycemia. Please note that hypoglycemia is life-threatening. It is important that you discuss any potential diet with your physician. This is extremely important if you take insulin or medications such as: Amaryl, Diabeta, Glipizide or any others for diabetes. If you have a blood glucose meter, make sure to use it regularly to monitor your blood sugar, as this requires a decrease in your medication. If you are diabetic, you should always consult with your physician first before starting any diet. If approached the right way, weight loss is a lifestyle change that people with diabetes can make to decrease their need for medication.

An important consideration is that some people with diabetes develop a kidney disease called diabetic nephropathy. People with nephropathy may require a reduction in their dietary protein intake. Please check with you doctor to determine if this meal plan is suitable for you medical conditions.

A break-down of the carbohydrate, protein, and fat for each day of the meal plan is listed below for your convenience in communicating with your doctor.

BistroMD meal plans average 1200 to 1400 calories per day. Of this:

20-25% of calories are from fat (25-35 grams of fat per day)
30-35% of calories from carbohydrates (90-110 grams per day)
40-45% of calories from protein (120-140 grams of protein per day)
