Diabetes Diagnosis and why it does Not Condemn you to a Life of Bland, Boring Food

Getting diagnosed with diabetes can be frightening, especially since many of us know very little about this potentially life-threatening condition.  Generally, the diabetes diagnosis conjures up instant images of a radical diet and insulin injections.  However, what most people don't realize is that many types of diabetes can be controlled and prevented through a combination of healthy food and exercise.   

What is diabetes?

The seventh leading cause of death in the United States is diabetes.

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases involving the hormone insulin.  A diabetes diagnosis means that you either have type 1 diabetes or type 2. Type 1 diabetes, where the body fails to produce insulin, is less common than Type 2 diabetes, where the body does not produce enough insulin to function properly. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-extremity amputations.

Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin like it should naturally be able to. This causes sugar to build up in your blood. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience symptoms ranging from frequent urination to becoming increasingly thirsty and hungry. 

Type 2 diabetes is responsible for nearly 95% of diabetes diagnosis in the United States and is typically associated with poor nutrition, weight gain, and lack of physical activity. 

How common is a diabetes diagnosis?

Sadly, diabetes is on the rise across the United States.  According to a 2011 study by the American Diabetes Association, 25.8 million children and adults—8.3% of the population—have received a diabetes diagnosis.  The Association estimates 18.8 million people already have a diabetes diagnosis, followed by an estimated 7 million who are undiagnosed and 79 million who have pre-diabetes.  In 2010, nearly 1.9 million new diabetes diagnosis cases were found in people aged 20 years and older.

Diabetes control and prevention

If you have received a diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes, you can take positive steps to control, prevent or even reverse the condition through healthy eating and nutrition.  Research indicates that even losing small amounts of weight can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by up to 30%, while weight loss can help people with diabetes improve glycemic control, lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and lower LDL ("bad" cholesterol).
