Diabetes and Diet: A Harmonious Pair

Diabetes and Diet: A Harmonious Pair

It's no secret that diabetics need to eat and live their lives differently than most people do. Diabetics and diet go hand-in-hand. There is more than one type of diabetes. People who do not have full-blown diabetes are diagnosed as "pre-diabetes", while others may be a Type 1 diabetic or a Type 2 diabetic. Each of these conditions has its own diet restrictions. If you are diagnosed early enough, though, you may be able to stave off diabetes and severe diet changes.

One of the things that every diabetic, no matter which type, has to watch out for is carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are foods that turn into sugar when they go through the digestion process. Unfortunately, carbohydrates can be found hidden in dozens of different types of food, from rice to bread to milk. Carbohydrates are most often found in starches or in the dairy family. Some vegetables, such as legumes, contain carbohydrates, but meat generally contains very little, which is why a lot of diabetes and diet regimens contain a lot of meat.

Learning how to count carbohydrates can be tricky. Let's imagine that you are allowed to have 120 grams of carbohydrates a day with your diabetes and diet. You have a good breakfast, spending only 20 grams of your carb allowance, and a generous lunch, spending 60 grams of your carb allowance. This leaves you with 40 grams for supper. You think you're doing fine, until a co-worker brings in a cake for another co-worker's birthday. You snag a piece, which counts for 45 of the carbs. That means your carbs are spent for the day.

People with diabetes do need to learn how to make the right choices, but dealing with diabetes and diet at the same time can be extremely tricky to master. There are all sorts of temptations calling to us every day, from the innocent birthday cake a co-worker brings in to the flashing lights of the 24-hour fast food joint just down the road. How can you combat all of these temptations?

One way is to have your food delivered to you. If you are going to have food delivered, make sure that it is from a company that understands the type of meals that a diabetic needs. Make sure that it is a company that serves delicious food, and is conscious of the amount, and types, of carbohydrates that they put in the meal.

We strive to create wholesome, delicious meals that take your eyes away from the flashing lights of the fast food joint and focus them on the delicious dinner in your freezer that is ready in mere moments.
