Diabetes and Diabetes Remedies—the Shocking Truth

Diabetes and Diabetes Remedies—the Shocking Truth

366 million.

That’s how many people suffer from diabetes around the world, according to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF).

That number is expected to climb to 552 million by 2030—which isn’t very far away.

18.6 million.

That’s how many adults, ages 20 and up, have been diagnosed with diabetes in the United States, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. A staggering 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in adults, ages 20 and up, in 2010 alone.

In 2011, nearly 26 million children and adults—8.3% of the population—had diabetes and 7 million people remained undiagnosed.

215,000.

That’s how many American children (below the age of 20) have been diagnosed with diabetes. Each year more than 13,000 youngsters are diagnosed with the disease.

A trend has occurred within American culture—a trend that we should not be proud of. American’s waist sizes are ballooning at rapid rates and so are diabetes diagnoses. This is not a coincidence. Thankfully there are diabetes remedies available. Although some may not be as safe as you may think.

More on that later.

What is Diabetes and Why do I Need to Know About It?

Diabetes is a disease that affects your blood glucose. Glucose is your brain’s main source of food. If your brain gets hungry and doesn’t get enough glucose, you may start to feel light-headed. It is also an important source of fuel for cells that make up your muscles and tissues.

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and type 2. Type 1 can develop at any age, but typically occurs during childhood or adolescence. Type 2 diabetes can develop at any age and is often preventable.

Genetic and environmental factors contribute to type 1 and 2; however, obesity is a big trigger for type 2 diabetes—but not everyone who has type 2 is overweight.

Diabetes means your body is unable to regulate blood glucose properly. In type 1 diabetes, the body is unable to produce enough insulin, the hormone responsible for transporting blood glucose into the cells to be burned for energy. In type 2 diabetes, the body develops a resistance to the function of insulin, thereby making it ineffective in transporting glucose into the cells.

Diabetes and Could be Enough to Break Your Wallet

According to recent data from this year, the annual cost of diabetes is $245 billion. Think of how many cars that could buy! In 2007, annual costs were $174 billion. Five years later and costs have gone up by $71 billion.

Medical expenditures for people with diabetes are 2.3 times higher than those without and recent estimates project that as many as 1-in-3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050.

This is a huge concern because a lot of Americans cannot afford any additional expenses. Even if you do not have or are not at risk for diabetes, it is always a good idea to maintain a healthy, well-rounded diet and get regular exercise.

Staying in good health will decrease your risk for diseases, especially diabetes.

Why the FDA is Cracking Down

The FDA has recently begun cracking down on companies selling illegal diabetes remedies. 15 letters were sent to foreign and domestic companies whose products were sold under the impression that they were a legitimate diabetic remedy.

Using these products could hinder sound treatment prescribed by a medical professional. They are in no way a substitute for substantial diabetic treatment.

“These people are fraudsters who are scamming people and creating risks that people are going to get very sick,” said Howard Sklamberg, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

These illegally sold diabetes remedies include:

- Products advertised as “natural” treatments for diabetes, but containing active pharmaceutical ingredients in unknown quantities.

- Dietary supplements and ayurvedic products.

- Unapproved drugs sold over-the-counter, including some at home products, intended to treat complications associated with the disease, which include relieving symptoms caused by nerve damage in the arms and legs.

Prescription drugs for diabetes sold by online pharmacies without a prescription.

The FDA has requested a written response from these companies within 15 business days explaining how the companies intend to fix the problem.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the products and companies listed in the warning letters were Sugar Balancer from Health King Enterprise & Balanceuticals Group Inc.; Diabetes Daily Care from Nature's Health Supply Inc.; MagniLife Diabetic Neuropathy Foot Cream from Magni Co.; Diaberex from Enhance Nutraceutical; Glytain from Glytain Internal Remedies; and Eradicator from Naturecast Products.

Unfortunately, officials have no way of knowing how many of the 26 million Americans affected by the disease, actually used the faulty products.

However, no serious side effects have been reported.

What to Do if You or Someone You Know has Diabetes

If you have diabetes you should get treatment from a doctor, plain and simple, no buts about it. However, diabetes treatments don’t always mean one trip to the doctor after another.

You can manage your diabetes by eating a well-rounded, healthy diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. If diet and exercise don’t control your blood sugar, you may need diabetes medications—prescribed by a doctor—or insulin therapy.

Symptoms include:

- Increased thirst and frequent urination

- Increased hunger

- Weight loss

- Fatigue

- Blurred vision

- Slow-healing sores or frequent infections

- Areas of darkened skin

See a doctor if you notice any of these symptoms. Also, see these tips for living with diabetes.
