A Diabetic Diet: Easier Than You Think

While consistent exercise, adequate sleep, and stress reduction also deserve recognition for diabetes management, diet plays the primary role in blood sugar regulation. But with the word "diet" casually thrown around, it is understandably difficult to distinguish what guidelines should be accepted or dismissed. However, a diabetes diet does not have to be a daunting task. It may even be easier than you think!

A Diabetic Diet: Easier Than You Think

What Is Diabetes and a Diabetic Diet?

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body is unable to effectively utilize glucose as energy, primarily related to faulty compromised insulin utilization. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, is activated when carbohydrates are consumed and assists in its cell entry. In less common type 1 diabetes, the insulin-producing pancreas is essentially becoming attacked by the body's own immune system. Type 2 diabetes is largely related to insulin resistance, a condition likely to occur in overweight and obese individuals. Ultimately, when the body lacks or becomes resistant to insulin, glucose remains in the blood rather than used as energy in the cells. Not managing diabetes in combination with consistently high blood sugars can cause a series of other complications, including heart disease and kidney failure. Luckily, though, a diabetic diet and lifestyle makeover has shown to manage weight, control blood sugars, and even reverse its presence!

How to Eat a Diabetic Diet

The Meal Plate
A diabetic meal plate is essentially a healthy meal plate, loaded with fresh veggies, complimented with lean protein, and paired commonly with a whole grain and/or healthy fat source. Meals are advised to contain no more than 60 grams of carbohydrate (four carb exchanges) while snacks should be limited to about 15 grams (one carb exchange). Though carbohydrates are the top instigator of blood sugar levels, pairing carb with protein and fat can further reduce the risk of sugar spikes.

Eating Patterns
Along with the meal composition, patterns and timing is also stressed. Eating consistently throughout the day, or about every 3 hours can allow for tighter blood glucose control. Worth important mentioning, the advice of consistent eating patterns is not granting you the go ahead to eat consistently large meals. The practice of moderated portions of meals and snacks still complies.
