Planning Your Diabetes Meal Plan

Planning Your Diabetes Meal Plan

Most people fear having diabetes. Why are they afraid? For many, it's not because it’s a fatal disease, but because it means that they have to watch what, and when, they eat. Individuals who are new to the diabetic lifestyle often believe that they will be stuck eating foods that are bland and tasteless. This could not be further from the truth.

Contrary to popular belief, there really is no such thing as a singular diabetes meal plan. The most important consideration for diabetics is to control blood sugar. This can be done by eating foods that are naturally low in sugar, and by eating at regular intervals. Most of the time, families tend to grab food and eat it on the go, rather than sit down and enjoy a meal together. We lead busy lives, and sometimes a quiet meal together just isn’t possible. Someone who is sticking to their own plan, though, should do their best to sit down and eat meals at the same approximate time each day.

When you eat is as important as what you eat. Fruits and vegetables should be a focus, as should whole grains. Whole grains contain carbohydrates, which break down into sugar during digestion. You might be thinking, WAIT!, sugar is a diabetic's enemy... Sugars that derive from whole grains, however, take much longer to break down than do breads made with white flour, which means that they help you feel full for a longer period of time.

One type of diabetes meal plan involves counting carbohydrates. The theory behind this type of diet is that if you eat the same amount of carbohydrates for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can regulate your blood sugar throughout the day. In doing so, you no longer have to worry about it rising and dropping unpredictably. Snacking is also a very important part of diabetic sugar regulation, but you have to choose the right snacks. A chocolate bar from the vending machine does not count as a snack. It is full of sugar that can damage your diet, and a multitude of other ingredients that will not help to keep you from feeling hungry for the rest of the day. This is not to say that you can not have an occasional chocolate bar as a treat, but rather that you should not count on these kinds of snacks to see you through if you are on a diabetes meal plan.

Consistency is the best way to keep your sugar from rising too high, or dropping too low. If you eat healthy meals at regular intervals, you will not have a hard time keeping your blood sugar within the range of acceptable levels. If you are eating here and there, and are snacking on things that aren’t good for you, you may find yourself having a difficult time keeping your blood sugar regulated.
