The theory behind this type of diet is that if you eat the same amount of carbohydrates for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can regulate your blood sugar throughout the day. In doing so, you no longer have to worry about it rising and dropping unpredictably. Snacking is also a very important part of diabetic sugar regulation, but you have to choose the right snacks. A chocolate bar from the vending machine does not count as a snack. It is full of sugar that can damage your diet, and a multitude of other ingredients that will not help to keep you from feeling hungry for the rest of the day. This is not to say that you can not have an occasional chocolate bar as a treat, but rather that you should not count on these kinds of snacks to see you through if you are on a diabetes meal plan.
Consistency is the best way to keep your sugar from rising too high, or dropping too low. If you eat healthy meals at regular intervals, you will not have a hard time keeping your blood sugar within the range of acceptable levels. If you are eating here and there, and are snacking on things that aren’t good for you, you may find yourself having a difficult time keeping your blood sugar regulated.
