High Fat versus High Carb - Effects On Body Composition

New studies of the high-fat versus high-carb debate have come out with some interesting implications for our overall health.

I'm Dr. Caroline Cederquist, giving you the Skinny on Your Health.

Researchers put men onto diets that were either high in carbohydrate or high in monounsaturated fats, the GOOD fats that we find in olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc. Each diet had a mix of both carbs and fats, but in different proportions.

After about six weeks, the differences really showed up in the blood work.

Those on the GOOD FAT diet had a drop in their triglycerides and bad LDL cholesterol levels, whereas those on the high-carb diet had no drop in triglycerides, and showed a drop in their good HDL cholesterol right along with their LDL.

The improvements on the GOOD FAT diet were independent of any weight loss, which seems to indicate that we can get those benefits by adding more of the right kinds of fats to our diet, even if we don't lose weight overall - but we've just got to remember to compensate by cutting those calories elsewhere, because we sure don't want to GAIN any!
