Of course, weight loss presents many benefits. It can make us feel great about our bodies, and more comfortable to be in our own skin. However, the benefits of weight loss reach beyond the superficial aspects of looking great and showing more skin.

For many, it means the difference between a healthy and comfortable lifestyle, and one filled with visits to the doctor. Constant worry, and anxiety, associated with the risks of future medical problems caused by obesity is not uncommon. For many who fall into the qualification of being obese, weight loss is a life or death situation.

The motivation to become healthy has to originate from an individual’s own desire to lead a better, and more comfortable, lifestyle. The biggest motivation, however, should come from the medical benefits that are brought on by healthy weight loss. From a medical standpoint, an excess amount of weight can present myriad health issues.

One of the biggest problems concerning health in the United States is heart disease. The biggest cause of heart disease is the process of atherosclerosis, during which, there is too much fat that accumulates on the walls of the blood vessels. The buildup of fat reduces blood flow, which can lead to serious health consequences. Another medical problem, brought on by an excess of body fat, is type two diabetes. The only way to cope with this illness is by way of healthy dieting.

It should also be mentioned that an unhealthy diet has been proven to be a contributing factor in the risk of developing certain cancers. It has been widely accepted that antioxidants, and other nutrients found in fresh fruits and vegetables, can protect against most cancers.
