Diabetic Diet from BistroMD: Tips for Diabetics

Diabetic Diet

A diabetic diet is likely to be on your mind if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, and most likely you are looking for a diabetic diet plan. While there is no one diet that is appropriate for all diabetics, it is known that people with diabetes need to closely watch their sugar and carbohydrate intake. It is also important that as a diabetic you eat approximately that same amount of food at the same time each day as a way to stabilize blood sugar levels. The tips below show some basic elements of a diabetic diet.

How To Diet For Diabetes:

Increase Starch Intake: You should have about 6 servings or more a day. An example is having a bagel with a small amount of jelly, or a bowl of cereal with skim milk.

Eat your vegetables: We have all heard this from our mothers when we were young, but following a diabetic diet, we really need to listen. You should have a piece or two of fruit a day, or try adding vegetables to stews, soups or other dishes.

Eat sweets and sugars in small amounts: This may be one of the most important aspects of a diabetic diet. You may include sweets or a small serving of dessert in your diet, but it should be at most once a week.

Consume Soluble Fibers: Soluble fibers are especially good for a person with diabetes, they help slow down the absorption of glucose from the intestines. Carrots for example, have soluble fiber, and so do legumes such as spinach.

Don't forget Insoluble Fibers: These fibers found in bran and nuts also have benefits to someone on a diabetic diet. They act as intestinal cleansers and cleanse the lower gastrointestinal tract.
