An Apple A Day...Blah Blah Blah

Everyone has heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” So why are people taking so much medicine these days? Are they unaware of this famous phrase? Ok so maybe you don’t like apples, well there are actually a ton of foods that serve medicinal purposes. So in the words of Hippocrates “Let food be thy medicine.” Foods can serve a multitude of purposes, they can make you not hungry, they can boost your immune system to help fight off illnesses, they can help to prevent heart disease, help with diabetes, and even help against getting cancer. Many people are not aware that the best medications are located right in front of them; all you got to do is just walk into your kitchen and look around.

Let’s think about everyday foods that are in a normal person’s diet. Bananas do a lot more than just provide the body with potassium, they also help regulate blood pressure, and strengthen your stomach lining to prevent against ulcers. I don’t think I have ever seen a monkey in the doctor’s office complaining about ulcers or having high blood pressure, have you? Nuts are also very helpful for one’s diet. Nuts are high in vitamin E and may help prevent cancer, heart disease, help reduce cholesterol, and lower risk of heart disease. Pretty much helping to protect against all the major issues Americans are worried about these days. Potatoes, like bananas, are high in potassium. They also contain cancer fighting inhibitors.

Another popular starch is rice, rice also has cancer inhibitors, it helps lower cholesterol and prevent kidney stones. So hear that guys, eat rice because I know no none of you want to deal with kidney stones. There is also asparagus which is really good for you, although it is scientifically proven to make your pee smell really really bad. Well maybe not scientifically proven, but everyone knows that after eating asparagus this happens. Asparagus has been shown to act against about thirty cancer causing agents.

A couple secret ingredients that most people don’t realize is helping them is garlic, onions, and mustard. Onions along with chives, shallots, scallions, and leeks have strong antioxidants. They may also help prevent blood clots and help fight bacterial and viral infections. Garlic is another superhero of food medicines. It serves many different helpful purposes. It can be an antibiotic which can help kill bacteria, fungi, and even intestinal parasites. It can lower blood-cholesterol levels, and works as a good cold medication. Garlic also acts as an effective decongestant and anti-inflammatory agent. Garlic also contains multiple anticancer compounds, antioxidants, and immune-system boosters. Most of all it is an awesome vampire repellant. I regularly eat garlic and I have not once been attacked by a vampire. Mustard along with horseradish can help relieve congestion from colds and sinus problems. So bye bye Benadryl and Pseudofed, here comes mustard! Mustard also can speed up your metabolism to help you burn more calories.

With all this knowledge about food and how it can serve in medicinal purposes why would anyone want to spend money on medications? Knowing how helpful food can be to someone’s help is something I carry over into my career. I am currently going to Johnson & Wales University majoring in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management. I am hoping to one day open my own catering business. With all the issues American’s are having with their health, people are going to be seeking more ways to eat healthier. I know that I will be there to provide the answers and food. I will be serving food that is healthy and food that tastes delicious. Food is one of my favorite things
