Diabetic Diet: Being Heart Healthy

Diabetic Diet: Being Heart Healthy

We only have one heart, and keeping it healthy is vitally important to the function of our bodies. Our heart pumps blood throughout our entire body, carrying nutrients to our organs and life to every limb.

Diabetics who undertake poorly designed diabetic diets are at an increased risk for developing cardiovascular and heart diseases. For this reason, it is crucial that any diabetic diet should be designed by a physician or medical professional.

It may come as a shock, but people who have diabetes have a greater chance of developing cardiovascular diseases, which can lead to a heart attack. Their risk of having other complications, such as a stroke, is four times higher than that of the average individual. These are very scary numbers, and are often enough to make anyone on a diabetic diet think twice about what they are eating every day.

The good news, though, is that there are a number of ways to prevent these kinds of medical complications. One way is to eat a diet with less fat. The less fat you eat, the less chance you have of clogging your arteries, which is one of the contributing factors of heart disease. Dietitians agree that in order to reduce your risk of heart problems, you should make sure that you take in 35% or less fat, as a total of your daily caloric intake.

How can you do this if you are on a diabetic diet? The first step is to eat more lean protein. Regular meats have excess fat, which is not a problem for individuals without diabetes, but poses a problem for someone who is diabetic. Lean meats can taste just as good, if not better, than meats with higher fat contents.

Another step in lowering your caloric intake is to limit the amount of alcohol you drink. It’s nice to enjoy a glass of wine during dinner, as long as you limit yourself to a single glass. It is also important to take into account the amount of sugar that you are allowed to take in during a normal day. Drinking too much can increase your blood sugar levels, which can lead to further medical complications.

If you are a smoker...quit! Smoking is an extremely unhealthy habit, and can lead to a number of nasty illnesses and diseases. Smokers have a much higher chance of having heart problems than non-smokers do, and when you add in the diabetes factor, those chances rise. Smoking in today's day and age is just plain silly, and increasingly costly. The best thing to do? Quit.

Utilizing a diabetic diet that caters not only to your blood glucose needs, but also your heart needs, can be a tricky balance. BistroMD provides meals that are healthy for your whole body: from your sugar levels, to your heart.
