South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet has gained both acclaim and fame over recent years, and it is no surprise. The South Beach diet was founded by Dr. Arthur Agatston and is based on the principles of controlling blood sugar which them controls our cravings. In his book The South Beach Diet Dr. Agatston details the science behind the diet. He informs us that foods that we though were healthy, actually are not. His plan instead includes a carbohydrate limiting plan that encourages the consumption of high-fiber foods, lean protein and healthy fats. The South beach Diet frowns upon eating items such as fruits, bread, and rice.

A downside to the South Beach Diet, and major differences from other diets, include a lack of concern regarding portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Having that full feeling while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that Dr. Agatston, a cardiologist, would bury his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers the three stages of the South Beach Diet plan. The first phase, which is the most restrictive period, lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your cravings and lose a few pounds. The second stage adds fruits and a handful of other carbs. The third stage is one of maintenance and is meant to last the remainder of your life.

Reviewers of the South Beach Diet book have stated that the book is ound, but lacks a sense of organization, and that “the first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing”.
