Expert Q&A: Why do all of the Bistro MD snacks contain protein?
An interview with Caroline J. Cederquist, M.D.
Adequate lean protein intake is critical when you are trying to lose fat. If you do not take in adequate protein, your body breaks down muscle tissue to met the nutritional needs. However, you cannot just eat lots of protein and expect to lose weight.
The body can only utilize a limited amount of protein at meals (20-50 grams) and the excess is dietary protein is converted into fat and stored. The average American diet consists of mostly carbohydrates for breakfast (cereal, fruit or bagels), a little protein at lunch and a large serving of protein at dinner like an 8 ounce steak. With such a diet, the body is deprived of protein most of the day and then is given more than it can use.
The Bistro MD meal plan was created to have adequate lean protein spread throughout the day in amounts the body can utilize. The consistent lean protein intake aids with maximum lose of body fat and it also provides satiety- the feeling of being full after meals.
