Diabetic Diet Food

Diabetic Diet Food

Diabetes is a serious condition that affects many North Americans and people worldwide. It is usually characterized by hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. This condition must be controlled or else one will suffer serious complications. So how do people with diabetes eat? What is good for them to eat? And is there such a thing as diabetic diet food?

It is recommended that people with diabetes have foods that are high in fiber and low in saturated fat. It may also be a good idea to lower your carbohydrate intake. Recently a UK based study found that food made specifically for people who suffer from diabetes isn't always good for those people. They cited high fat content, and high price as part of their reasons.

Of course no matter what you eat you should always be taking your insulin and monitoring your blood sugar level. That being said it is important to know that when to eat is as important as what to eat. It is important to know what type of insulin you are using (fast acting, medium, etc.) as well as testing your blood frequently. If you test your blood before going to bed and find your levels are low it is a good idea to eat a long lasting carbohydrate (toast, fruit, scone, etc.) to prevent nighttime hyperglycemia.

It is a good idea to have carbohydrates consist of half your diet. Carbohydrates cause your blood sugar levels to rise. If you want to boost your carb intake then eat lots of starch, fruits and milk. Also if you want some sugar look on the nutritional label and anything ending in ose (glucose, fructose, sucrose) is a sugar.

Diabetic diet food doesn't have to be the same thing everyday. Talk to one of our dietitians about getting a diabetic friendly meal that is perfect for you. We can create three different meals a day for you to enjoy. So don't be confined by diabetes.

It is recommended that a diabetic eat at the same time everyday to make monitoring easy. A lot of doctors will recommend that a person who is both overweight and diabetic have a diet that consists of 1,500 calories per day. This will help you loose weight as well as keep your blood sugar levels at a normal level.

People with diabetes are at a higher risk of heart problems. It is a good idea to limit your fat intake to 30% of your daily consumption. Fat takes longer for your body to digest so it doesn't help to raise your blood sugar.

Diabetic diet food requires a balance between the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats you consume. Whether you have had diabetes for a while or have just been diagnosed with the illness there are a few things you need to keep in mind: Increase your starch intake, eat your vegetables, only eat sweets in small amounts, and don't forget about your insoluble fibers. Always consult a dietician and your doctor when considering diet changes.
