Is Bistro MD Appropriate For Someone With Diabetes?

This meal plan is really ideal for people with diabetes, because it is an adequate protein, low fat, low glycemic load, not to mention gourmet, meal plan that tastes great.

Diabetes and snacking A lot of people ask if they really need to eat the snacks, either because they are not hungry, or they believe them to be extra calories. The thought process then follows that by cutting them out they will lose weight faster. Eating the snacks provided in your BistroMD meal plan is very important, as well as eating protein roughly every 3-4 hours in order to keep blood sugars stable. This also ensures an adequate caloric intake, and keeps your metabolism from dropping.

If you are on medication to treat diabetes and lower your blood sugar, you may need a lower dose of medication to avoid hypoglycemia. This is most important for people with diabetes who take insulin or oral medications such as sulfonaureas, which cause your body to release more insulin. Some of my patients have discontinued taking large doses of insulin entirely as they follow the meal plan. Please note that hypoglycemia is life threatening. If it occurs while driving, you could get into an accident. Please discuss any attempts at dieting with your physician if you take insulin or medication like Amaryl, Diabeta, Glipizide and many others for diabetes. If you have a blood glucose meter, make sure to use it and determine if your blood sugar is falling, as this requires a decrease in your medication and always consult your physician. Weight loss is one of the lifestyle changes people with diabetes can do to improve diabetes and decrease the need for medication.

An important note to consider is that some people with diabetes develop kidney disease called diabetic nephropathy. People with nephropathy may require a reduction in their dietary protein intake. Please check with you doctor to determine if this meal plan is suitable for you with your medical conditions.A break down of the carbohydrate, protein and fat for each day of the meal plan is listed below for your convenience in communicating with your doctor.

Bistro MD meal plans average 1200 to 1400 calories per day. Of this:
20-25% of calories are from fat (25-35 grams of fat per day),
30-35% of calories from carbohydrates (90-110 grams per day)
40-45% of calories from protein (120-140 grams of protein per day)
